Pluto and its moon CharonPluto No Longer a Planet

August 25, 2006

New historic guidelines were rejected on Thursday, August 24, 2006, by leading astronomers resulting in the downsizing of the solar system from nine planets to eight.  The International Astronomical Union demoted Pluto from planetary status, which it has held since it was discovered in the 1930s.
