REQUEST FOR INPUT ON NASA'S PLANETARY SYSTEMS SCIENCE
CLUSTER PROPOSAL

The Planetary Systems Science/Management Operations Working Group (PSS/MOWG) has been charged with preparing a proposal representing the NASA Planetary Systems Cluster for the 2001 Senior Review. The PSS Cluster includes Research and Analysis (R & A) work in planetary astronomy, planetary atmospheres, and near-earth object research. The purpose of the review is to evaluate the work for relevance to NASA's strategic goals and for possible reallocation of R & A resources between clusters. The Proposal rules call for (1) a few highlights from the past 2-3 years, (2) highlights of work currently in progress, and (3) a description of one
research area in strongest need of augmentation/creation. The MOWG regards this activity as extraordinarily important to the future of planetary system science and requests community input on the items listed above. The schedule dictates having a good draft of the Proposal by March 15, 2001.Send suggestions (a paragraph or two of narrative and eye-catching illustrations) to the Chair, Cluster Proposal Committee, Drake Deming of
the Goddard Space Flight Center, ddeming@pop.600.gsfc.nasa.gov For further information contact Jack Brandt, Chair PSS/MOWG, jbrandt@as.unm.edu

Announcement of Io Web site/newsletter

My name is Jason Perry and I am a 17 year old high school student. I run an extensive website on Io called the Ionian Web. Starting in January 2001, I will be publishing on my website and by email a bimonthly newsletter with news on Io. This newsletter will be based on the template of the Distant EKOs newsletter for any of you who read it. I'm still hammering out the name but right now I'm thinking it will be "The Pillanian News" (though any suggestion would be helpful). This newsletter is not meant as a rival to this list at all since this list allows for the rapid dissemination of news while this newsletter only comes out every 2 months. Every issue, the newsletter will include:

  • Short articles, announcements, and editorials
  • General news items deemed of interest to the Io community
  • Recent volcanic activity (activity since the last issue)
  • Status reports of on-going programs
  • Requests for collaboration or observing coordination
  • Abstracts of papers accepted to journals
  • Titles of submitted papers and conference articles
  • Thesis abstracts
  • Table of contents/outlines of books
  • Conference announcements
  • Job advertisements
  • Links to websites of interest
  • Recently released pictures (only in the website edition.

The reason for posting this message is not only to make all of you aware of this but to also ask for suggestions as far as starting a newsletter goes and also to ask for submissions particularly for Status reports, short articles, announcements, editorials, requests, abstracts, and anything else you deem important to submit. Another thing I want to do with the newsletter is that every issue I will have an article describing one person's research (what, how, why stuff). If any of you want to submit an article describing what you are doing, that would most certainly be welcomed. Submission can made via email or via ftp server (though you do need to contact me via email if you would like to go that route). Files types accepted include regular email, Microsoft Word, PDF, HTML, TXT, and PostScript. The actual newsletter will be published in PDF for e-mail subscribers and Word, PDF, HTML, TXT, and PostScript for the online version. You can send submissions via e-mail to volcanopele@netzero.net.

Some other submission information:

Enter text of Abstract only for accepted papers. Papers to be accepted or conference proceedings only need Title, authors, and contact information. Please specify the status of your paper. What ever you submit, please include your name, other authors names, affilitation/institutional information, and contact information.
Include journal, volume, and page number if you know them (applies to papers) For thesis abstracts, include where, when, and your advisor's name, plus contact information. If possible, include preprint availability information

For those who would like to recieve the newsletter by email, send an e-mail to volcanopele@netzero.net and in the subject field put subscribe Pillan "Your Email Address" . Also let me know if your e-mail address changes so I don't send it to your old one. If the newsletter bounces four times, I will put your address on a bouncing list and I will send you blank message once a week till a message gets through. If after a month and email still bounces, I will assume that your e-mail address is dead and I will unsubscribe you. As stated before the newsletter will be sent by e-mail in PDF format. Finally, the website for the newsletter is not up yet but
when it does, look for it at http://members.fortunecity.com/volcanopele/newsletter/ . For now you can visit my page at http://members.fortunecity.com/volcanopele/. If any you have any suggestions or comments, please don't hesitate to contact me at volcanopele@netzero.net.
