IJW / Laboratory and Theory Discipline

Published/Unpublished Laboratory Data

Because no one has been posting unpublished data on the IJW lab/theory web site, that link has now been replaced by a page that provides various links to discussions of laboratory needs for solar-system research. Your thoughts and additions are encouraged (see below).

A NASA Laboratory Astrophysics Workshop was held at Ames on May 1-3, 2002. A group of about 20 people represented the planetary science community at the meeting and participated in a breakout session on the last day to discuss recommendations and future plans. An invited review, "A Solar System Perspective on Laboratory Astrophysics", was given by Dale Cruikshank. One of the purposes of the meeting was to gather input to be provided to the current NASA strategic planning process. As such, an executive summary of the meeting was written by the Scientific Organizing Committee and sent to the NASA Origins, Structure and Evolution of the Universe, and Solar System Exploration Subcommittees following the meeting. In addition, a draft "master list" of laboratory needs for planetary science has been compiled by the solar-system breakout group. A laboratory workshop is being planned in conjunction with this fall's DPS meeting in Birmingham, AL, and a special solar system laboratory session has been requested for the fall AGU meeting. The executive summary from the scientific organizing committee of the Ames workshop and the draft "master list" of planetary science laboratory needs are now posted on the IJW Laboratory and Theory discipline web site.

In the future, a compilation of data "providers" will also be posted. If you would like to provide input on either laboratory needs or capabilites to be included in these master lists, please send email to Melissa McGrath, mcgrath@stsci.edu. Further details about the upcoming workshops and sessions will be provided in future IJW mailings.

If you have your own "master list" of laboratory/theory needs related to IJW and want to have this list posted on the IJW lab/theory website, please send e-mail to Julie Moses, moses@lpi.usra.edu.
