Activities About Moon Phases
2nd – 5th Grades: Observing the Moon’s Phases

Paper Plate Moon
Students draw the Moon’s shape onto a paper plate, and can then organize several different observations by date and appearance.

A Private Universe Project
A similar observation activity in which students journal their observations of the Moon.

Phrases for Phases
A song about the phases designed to help students remember the names and appearances of the different phases.

Oreo Cookie Phases
Students can visualize the phases by turning sandwich cookies into the various phases; not recommended for teaching the reason for phases, but very useful in helping students recognize the names and shapes of the different phases.
