Increase Your Understanding:  Using NASA Data for Authentic Science Inquiry in Pre-service Teacher Preparation

Tuesday, January 2, 2007 at Conference Hotel
2:00 p.m.–5:00 p.m. in The Hilton Clearwater Beach Resort

Presenters:  Rick Pomeroy, UC-Davis; Stephanie Shipp, NASA, and Tim Slater, University of Arizona

Contemporary science education reform efforts consistently encourage teachers to more frequently and more deeply engage their students in authentic inquiry learning experiences. The most meaningful inquiry experiences engage students in meaningful questions, to facilitate students in pursuing evidence and analyzing data to answer their questions, and to communicate and defend their data-based conclusions.  However, managing diverse students with widely varying interests, motivations, and backgrounds is challenging even for the most experienced teachers.  In this half-day workshop, participants will utilize NASA online data sets and powerful analysis resources to develop the knowledge and skills for managing inquiry learning appropriate for education students in pre-service teacher preparation programs. The underlying long-term goal for this workshop is that our prospective teachers who have robust experiences engaging in authentic inquiry will be most able to bring inquiry learning to their students. Participants are requested to bring their own laptops, equipped with MS Office, and a CD-ROM drive.
