Meeting Location and Date
The Southwest Association for Science Teacher Education (SW-ASTE) Conference will be held October 12–14, 2012, at the Lunar and Planetary Institute (LPI), located in the Universities Space Research Association (USRA) building, 3600 Bay Area Boulevard, Houston TX 77058.
Purpose and Scope
From the rich wildlife environment of the bayou to lunar rocks and meteorites, we will traverse the worlds of science education!
SW-ASTE invites proposals from university students, classroom teachers, and college faculty for presentations at the annual SW-ASTE conference. There will be presentations about Science Teacher Education (pre-service and in-service) plus Science Education (in general).
Meeting Format
There will be several sessions, including oral and poster presentations about research or practice, hands-on presentations that engage the audience in an activity, and roundtable discussions of a general science education topic.
Call for Abstracts
Abstracts may be submitted to request presentations for research (proposed, in progress, or completed) or practice (contemplated, underway, or completed):

Presentations may be in a variety of forms:
- Typical “stand and deliver” 20-minute oral presentation about research or practice (choose “oral” as the presentation method on the abstract submission form)
- Hands-on demonstration that engages the audience in an activity (choose “demonstration” as the presentation method on the abstract submission form)
- One-hour roundtable discussion of a general science education topic, such as the teaching of evolution or the use of standardized tests to assess teacher education programs (choose “panel” as the presentation method on the abstract submission form)
- Poster display (dimensions of prepared posters should be 44” x 44”) (choose “poster” as the presentation method on the abstract submission form)
Preparation and Submission of Abstracts:
Authors are encouraged to start the submission process early so the USRA staff will have time to provide assistance in the event of technical problems. For technical assistance, contact Linda Tanner (281-486-2142) or Renée Dotson (281-486-2188), or send an e-mail message to publish@lpi.usra.edu.
Step 1: Download the template.
Step 2: Write the abstract using the format shown in the template.
Step 3: Save and close the abstract file on your computer.
Step 4: Fill out the electronic abstract submission form and upload the abstract file. Note: This form is part of the USRA Meeting Portal, which requires users to set up a personal profile to access the form (setting up a profile is quick and easy, requiring only about two or three minutes).
Notice of abstract acceptance will be e-mailed by September 18, 2012.

Credit card registrations: Participants registering by credit card MUST use the secure electronic registration form. Note: This form is part of the USRA Meeting Portal, which requires users to set up a personal profile to access the form (setting up a profile is quick and easy, requiring only about two or three minutes)
Other methods of payment: Those registering using any other method of payment (check, money order, traveler’s check, or wire transter) must contact the LPI Meeting Registrar for detailed instructions.
Note: USRA has a third-party payment page available. Participants required to register using a third party (e.g., SATERN for NASA civil servants) may still register in advance using the electronic registration form. The confirmation e-mail you receive after registering will include payment instructions to submit to the third party. Please be aware, however, that your registration will not be considered complete until the funds have been received.
Cancellations: Requests for cancellation with a fee refund (less a $25.00 processing fee) will only be accepted through October 1, 2012. Those who fail to attend and do not notify USRA prior to the October 1 deadline will forfeit their full fee.
Special Events
A pre-conference tour of the Johnson Space Center Astromaterials Lab is being arranged for Friday, and a tour of the Armand Bayou Nature Center is being considered for Friday or Saturday evening. Invited speakers will be announced shortly.
Accommodations
The conference hotel is the Candlewood Suites, which has agreed to conference rates of $89.99 for a studio suite and $99.00 for a one bedroom. To qualify for this rate, you must call the hotel directly at 281-461-3060 and identify yourself as being with USRA. The hotel is located one mile from the LPI. Registered conference attendee contact information will be shared to assist participants searching for roommates.
Transportation
The closest airport is Houston’s William P. Hobby Airport (HOU), which is 14 miles from the LPI and the conference hotel. Taxi service one-way is approximately $25, about the same as the SuperShuttle.
Carpooling will be encouraged to assist conference attendees without vehicles. The LPI’s entrance is located on Middlebrook Drive, not Bay Area Boulevard, and the sign “USRA” is at the entrance to the parking lot. The address is 3600 Bay Area Blvd. Houston TX 77058.
