This free workshop at the Lunar and Planetary Institute provides a depth of content through a variety of hands-on and inquiry-based activities. Topics include:

Moon Mania: Lunar Phases
Use observations of the Moon’s changing appearance and hands-on activities to build an understanding of the lunar cycle. Explore kinesthetic models of the moon’s phases to assess your students’ understanding. Addresses TEKS 8.7 (B).
Let’s Talk Tides
Check out online resources and assessment activities, and participate in a kinesthetic activity and an inquiry-driven data activity to model how the position of the Moon and Sun affects our ocean tides. Addresses TEKS 8.7 (C).

Topography and Satellite Images
Explore hands on activities on topographic maps and use satellite images to create a list of criteria to identify geologic and erosional features in images. Addresses TEKS 8.9 (C)
Seasons
Use a variety of data sets, observations, and models to develop an inquiry-based understanding of seasons. We will incorporate formative assessments and discuss common misconceptions. Addresses TEKS 8.7 (A)

Characteristics of the Universe
Discover how astronomers study the stars, nebulae, and galaxies that make up the Universe! Create classification diagrams, explore the properties of light, and model the scale of our Galaxy through a variety of hands-on activities. Addresses TEKS 8.8 (A,B,C,D)
