50 Minute Space Science - It Can Be Done!!

Postby Angelow » Thu Mar 18, 2010 9:52 am

A 50-minute “Space Science at Your Library” program was presented by Brunswick County Library staff at the Eastern Regional Summer Reading Workshop in Fayetteville, NC. In order to get Youth Services people excited about teaching space science within the time limit, we just hit what our kids’ groups chose as the five best activities. We started with a demonstration of Build and Launch a Model Rocket for all 64 participants, and then broke into four rotating groups who did hands-on activities: Strange New Planets, Space Stations, UV Man and UV Man in Space, and The Black Hole Game.

We had displays of Galactic Mobiles, Glow-in-the Dark Constellations, an edible LRO, and a Mars Colony that participants could view. We gave hand-outs for all activities and displays with instructions, links to websites, and materials suppliers. The participants seemed to have a good time, and we certainly had fun preparing and presenting the program!
