LPI’s Lunar Sample Atlas recognized as Digital Library of the Week
The American Library Association listed the Lunar and Planetary Institute’s (LPI’s) Lunar Sample Atlas as the "Digital Library of the Week" in the association's July 28, 2010 e-newsletter. The NASA Lunar Science Institute’s Center for Lunar Science and Exploration at the LPI and Johnson Space Center recently announced the addition of thousands of new digital images to the Lunar Sample Atlas and Apollo Thin-Section Atlas. The Lunar Sample Atlas highlights laboratory images of Moon-rock samples. Containing full-color views in microscopic thin-sections, the digital library also offers cutting views and diagrams that illustrate how the samples were subdivided for scientific analyses and in situ views of the samples on the Moon’s surface.
The Lunar Sample Atlas contains information about the type of sample (e.g., rock, soil), lithology (e.g., basalt, norite), and a description of the sample. Links to additional information about each sample are provided for those that have been previously described in The Lunar Sample Compendium and Lunar Sample Catalogs. The atlas illustrates both the scientific value and the artistic beauty of lunar samples. Users will likely revel in the stained-glass appearance of these treasures from the Moon.
LPI Scientists Attend 73rd Annual Conference of Meteoritical Society
Scientists from the LPI had a strong visible presence at the Meteoritical Society conference in New York City. This conference is the premier international meeting for researchers in planetary geology, meteorites, and cosmic dust exploration and development. The USRA Houston Program Services group managed the meeting, in collaboration with the American Museum of Natural History (New York).

Scientists of LPI and JSC Busy with Summer Interns
July is peak month for the summer intern programs at the LPI, both the Science program and the Lunar Exploration Program. This summer, we host twelve science interns and nine exploration interns. All are busy in their research, aiming for its completion and final presentation in early August.

The LPI is managed by the Universities Space Research Association (USRA), a national, nonprofit consortium of universities chartered in 1969 by the National Academy of Sciences at the request of NASA. USRA operates programs and institutes focused on research and education in most of the disciplines engaged in space-related science and engineering. Institutional membership in USRA now stands at 100 leading research universities.
The LPI is operated by USRA under a cooperative agreement with the Science Mission Directorate of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
