Planetary Cartography Collection

Mercury

The Mariner 10 mission to Mercury acquired sufficient imagery to map about 50% of the surface. These maps include shaded relief, geologic, and several special purpose maps.

Venus

These maps include a series based on Venera 15 and 16 data, three compilations based on Pioneer Venus data, and maps based on data from both projects. Magellan images were used to produce an additional series, the Full-Resolution Radar Mosaics, in print form and on CD-ROM.

Moon

The lunar maps make up the largest portion of planetary maps and were created from Earth-based imagery as well as from lunar missions such as Lunar Orbiter and Apollo. The lunar maps consist of a number of map series including the Controlled Mosaics (CM), Lunar Astronautical Charts (LAC), Lunar Topographic Orthophotomaps (LTO), and Lunar Orthophotomaps (LO). Celementine imagery has been used to produce the Clementine Digital Image Model UVVIS 750-nm Basemap on CD-ROM.

Mars

Mars maps consist of several series. Imagery from the Mariner 4, 6, 7, and 9 missions was used for the Mars Chart series. Viking images were used to produce serveral additional series including the Mars Traverse Mecator (MTM) series and three digital map series, the Mosaicked Digital Image Model (MDIM), the Digital Terrain Model (DTM), and a set of high-resolution image maps of selected areas, all on CD-ROM.

Jovian Satellites

Maps of the jovian satellites vary in type and scale and include shaded relief, natural color, geologic, and/or controlled photomosaics.

Saturnian Satellites

Only planetwide compilations are available for the saturnian satellites. Types include both controlled photomosaics and shaded relief with surface markings, except for Mimas, which is available only as a shaded relief map.

Uranian Satellites

A controlled photomosaic and shaded relief maps are available for each of the uranian satellites listed, with scales ranging from 1:2,000,000 to 1:10,000,000.

Neptunian Satellites

Maps have been prepared for only this one Neptunian satellite.
