Regional Planetary Image Facility

The Regional Planetary Image Facilities (RPIF) were established by NASA to provide access to planetary images and maps for use by the scientific and educational communities. The facilities house imagery and cartographic products from missions such as Apollo, Clementine, Galileo, Viking, Voyager and Mars Global Surveyor.

Image Collection

Planetary imagery is available in a variety of formats, including negatives, prints, positive transparencies, 35-millimeter slides, video, and digital disks. The collection also includes press release images, lunar sample images, slide sets, photo atlases, and globes. A more detailed description of the CIRS imagery holdings is available below.

Map Collection

Maps for various planets and satellites have been produced in several formats. Among them are topographic, shaded relief, and geologic folded and flat maps, atlases, and digital maps. A detailed description of the CIRS cartographic holdings is provided below. The maps have been cataloged and the library catalog can be used to determine if a specific map is in the CIRS collection.

Equipment

The RPIF at LPI has a variety of equipment that is available to qualified users.

Services

Temporary workspace and equipment access are available for qualified users. The reference staff can assist with using the collection and the equipment and with identifying and obtaining materials.

Reference questions regarding planetary space science can be submitted by phone, fax, or e-mail.
