A MESSENGER Mercury Dual Imaging System (MDIS) Data Users’ Workshop will be held in association with the 44th Lunar and Planetary Science Conference on Sunday, March 17, 2013, from 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM at The Woodlands Waterway Marriott and Hotel and Convention Center, The Woodlands, TX, in the Montgomery Ballrooms B/C. This workshop is intended for anyone interested in using MDIS data.
Since entering orbit in 2011, MESSENGER’s MDIS has acquired over 100,000 images of Mercury’s surface and created the first global maps of the Solar System’s innermost planet. MDIS images are available in NASA’s Planetary Data System (PDS), and on March 8, 2013, the first global maps based on MDIS images will be released by the PDS. This workshop will introduce all of the MDIS images and advanced data products available in the PDS, discuss the different calibrations and corrections applied to the data, introduce newly released global maps, and present tools and software available to navigate and analyze MDIS data. The overall goal of the workshop is to increase the awareness and accessibility of the MDIS dataset to the larger scientific community, to support ongoing scientific projects, and to enable future research proposals.
