Comments from Former Interns About the Program

"This program was a wonderful experience.  I learned a lot, not only in terms of academic information but also about what the scientific process really entails and also about the life of a scientist.  I was fortunate to have a wonderful and patient advisor, which made the process much more enjoyable and informative.  I met some wonderful people, both interns and scientists.  I believe this summer experience is a truly valuable one and I would highly recommend it to anyone trying to see if planetary science is a field they would like to explore."

Michael Kaplan
2007 Summer Intern

"My experience through the LPI summer intern program was the best I’ve had in terms of an undergraduate research experience. I’ve done other summer internships before, but the LPI internship had bonuses that others don’t. In addition to doing research in the forefront of planetary science, I had the opportunity to work alongside some very talented scientists who seemed more than eager to share their knowledge. I had the opportunity to attend a series of seminars where I learned exactly what these scientists research, and was able to grasp a sense of their work environment. I was treated not as an undergraduate who knows nothing, but as a fellow researcher – there was a sense of camaraderie not just among the other interns, but with my advisor and his associates as well. Moreover, along with this incredible research experience I met a number of other talented students who will someday, no doubt, be my colleagues when I pursue a research career, and had the great opportunity to travel and spend time with these individuals. From this summer, I look forward very much to a career in research and feel endowed with the tools I need to attain this goal."

"This internship is a unique and insightful experience. So far, it has exposed me to different types of research conducted in my field of interest, and has expanded my thoughts on future work and career goals. Not only am I able to work with professionals in the science world, but I am also able to meet other students with similar interests who are considering planetary studies for their post-graduate work. It is an enjoyable working atmosphere and on the weekends we (the interns) always have fun exploring the sights of Houston!"

2003 LPI Summer Intern

"The Lunar and Planetary Institute's summer intern program has been an amazing experience. I have always been interested in astronomy and planetary geology, but courses on these topics are limited at my university. Now I am certain I want to pursue planetary geology in the future. With this opportunity, I have learned so much and met so many great people that I cannot think of a better way to have spent my summer."

Amy Maloy
2003 LPI Summer Intern

"It's been an exciting learning experience, and the numerous seminars have been very interesting for the most part. Working on my project has been overall a rewarding experience thus far and has been helpful as I ponder my path after I finish my undergraduate studies. Hands down the best summer job I've ever had."

Samuel Coradetti

"This was a great opportunity to interact with top scientists in many disciplines, do research on exciting current issues in planetary science and create future opportunities."
