Final Announcement — April 2011

Where and When

The next Conference on Micro-Raman Spectroscopy and Luminescence Studies in the Earth and Planetary Sciences (CORALS II) will be held May 18–20, 2011, at the Spanish CSIC Central Campus in Madrid, Spain.

Purpose

The primary aim of the conference is to assess the state of the art and reliability of micro-Raman spectroscopy as well as luminescence-based spectroscopy and microscopy and related techniques in Earth and planetary sciences.

The conference will be organized to maximize transfer of knowledge among the participants. The scientific program will provide a comprehensive overview of recent results and development trends in optical and luminescence spectroscopic research applied to Earth and planetary sciences.

Conference Format

Oral sessions will be held from Wednesday morning, May 18, to Friday afternoon, May 20. A poster session will be held on Friday, May 20. Posters will be on display throughout the entire meeting. For more information, view the detailed program. Author notification letters will not be sent out, so authors should check the author index to see where their presentation has been scheduled.

The conference will include invited and contributed talks and poster presentations. Oral presentations will be limited to 15 minutes including discussion. Plenary lectures will be 30 minutes including discussion. Computer projection will be available. The official language of the conference is English. The dimensions for poster presentations are no more than 75 cm (29 inches) wide and 120 cm (47 inches) high.

Conference Publications

Submitted abstracts will be limited just to a single page, and will be reviewed to accept or reject the proposed contribution mainly on the basis of demonstrated results and conference scope adjustment. Authors of selected abstracts will be asked to write a four-page paper for publication in a special issue of Spectroscopy Letters. Templates for these papers will be provided at a later date.

Social Events

Social events will include the following:

Wednesday morning, May 18: Welcome reception

Wednesday evening, May 18: Cocktail party in the Meteorites Exhibit Hall of the Museo Nacional of Ciencias Naturales; attendees will also have access to the historical collections and the geological analytical facilities (including the Raman and spectra cathodoluminescence microscopes)

Thursday evening, May 19: Gala Dinner Banquet in a historical restaurant in the Madrid City Centre

Friday afternoon, May 20: Wine and spirit tasting during the afternoon poster session

After the conclusion of the meeting at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, we encourage participants to take advantage of the many shopping opportunities available, or to take an evening walking tapas and bars tour of the Madrid City Centre. The local organizers will be happy to serve as tour guides for these excursions if participants are interested.

All these activities, along with lunch on campus on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, and the field trip on Saturday (see below), are included in the conference registration fee.

Registration

The registration fee for this conference will be €300 for professionals, €150 for students, and €150 for guests. Registration includes the welcome reception, coffee breaks, lunches on campus, a gala dinner banquet, a wine and spirit tasting during the poster session, the field trip on Saturday, and the program and abstract volume. Medical insurance during the dates of the conference is also included. Accommodations are not included, and are the responsibility of the individual participants.

The deadline for registration in advance of the conference is April 18, 2011. Registration after that date will be onsite only (cash only), at an increased fee of €400 for professionals, €200 for students, and €200 for guests.

Participants from outside Europe for whom it is difficult to make a money transfer may submit the registration form by the deadline but pay the reduced fee on site.

* Note:  Registrations can only be made by electronic bank transfers (bank orders). No credit cards or checks will be accepted. To register, use the downloadable registration form provided.

Field Trip

On Saturday, May 21, there will be a field trip by bus through the Sierra de Guadarra Mountains. The cost for this trip, including bus transportation and sandwiches and drinks to be eaten in the countryside, is included in the registration fee. For a detailed agenda, view the program for the field trip.
