WHERE AND WHEN

On behalf of the Geochemical Society, we are pleased to invite you to attend the Seventh Annual Goldschmidt Conference, to be held from Monday, June 2, through Friday, June 6, 1997, at the Westin La Paloma in Tucson, Arizona, USA. The Goldschmidt Conference is an international conference of geochemists, and is held alternatively in Europe and North America. The content of the meeting reflects to some extent the host institution(s).

The University of Arizona’s Department of Planetary Sciences/Lunar and Planetary Laboratory is dedicated to the common goal of understanding and teaching about the formation and evolution of the planetary system. The Department of Geosciences focuses on research and education dealing with the nature, genesis, and history of the Earth and its crust, and interdisciplinary approaches to research in the geosciences are strongly encouraged. Both departments have developed a well-deserved reputation for world-class research and graduate education.

The city of Tucson is located in Pima County, Arizona. It is 116 miles south of Phoenix, the state capital, and is about 65 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border. Located in the Basin and Range province near the Colorado Plateau, the southern Rocky Mountains, and the Gulf of California, Tucson offers a remarkable natural setting. Arizona is famous for its warm, dry climate, with an average June minimum temperature of 67°F (19°C), an average maximum temperature of 99°F (37°C), and almost no chance of rain (June average = 0.22").

SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM

General sessions deal with new results on all aspects of geochemical research. The program is divided into themes and symposia. Click here for a schedule of these theme sessions, symposia, and other conference activities.

The complete program and abstracts are in PDF format, viewable with the Adobe Acrobat reader, which can be downloaded free of charge.

ORAL PRESENTATIONS

Oral presentations will be given in parallel sessions from Monday morning through Friday afternoon, except on Wednesday when a field trip will be held. Each contributed oral presentation will be limited to 10 minutes plus 5 minutes for discussion. Available projection equipment includes two 35-mm slide projectors and two overhead projectors.

POSTER PRESENTATIONS

There will be a poster session held on Tuesday evening. The poster display space is 4' x 4' (122 cm x 122 cm).

STUDENT ACCOMMODATIONS

Twenty-five of the same resort-quality rooms at the Westin La Paloma have been made available for use by undergraduate and graduate students who are members of the Geochemical Society or the European Association of Geochemistry. The student room rate is $72 per night plus 7.5% tax. Up to four people per room are allowed. You are responsible for making your own hotel reservations AND finding a roommate(s) to share hotel costs. You must identify yourself as a student participant of the Goldschmidt Conference when making your reservation, and may be required to provide proof of student status upon check-in at the hotel. Your reservation must be requested by fax to the hotel at 520-577-5877. These reservations are NOT available by using the Westin 800 telephone number shown above.

LOCAL TRANSPORTATION

Rental Cars:  Public transportation in Tucson is poor, so we have made arrangements with the Budget rental car agency to provide special rates starting at $27 per day or $118 per week (for a compact car). Identify yourself as a Goldschmidt Conference participant, Group Code Z12, to obtain these rates.

Airport Shuttle Service:  The Arizona Stagecoach (520-889-1000), a local airport shuttle service, is located inside the airport terminal on the baggage level next to the Hertz booth. The shuttle leaves the airport every 15 minutes, and the cost of their service to the Westin La Paloma is $21. Taxi service is also available from the Tucson International Airport at an average cost of $20-30.

GUEST ACTIVITIES

Tucson has many natural and cultural attractions. Information will be included in the registration packets.

FIELD TRIP     » NOTE «     Field Trip Is Full, No More Reservations Being Taken!

We are planning an all-day field trip for Wednesday, June 4, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., to the Sierrita mine, an open-pit, base-metal deposit that will show the intimate association between hydrothermal and magmatic processes. The cost of the trip, including lunch and beverages, is $50. The mine is located close to the city of Tucson and has a similar climate.

Participants are required to bring boots. Hardhats will be supplied by the organizers. It is important that participants realize that it will be very hot (~107°F; ~42°C) and that there will be very little shade in the open pit. Approximately four hours will be spent outdoors. However, there will be no strenuous climbing or hiking.

SOCIAL EVENTS

The Welcome Party will take place on Sunday, June 2, 1997, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. poolside at the Westin La Paloma. Conference registration will be conducted in the Westin La Paloma lobby area during this event.

The Awards Buffet and Mariachi Party will take place poolside on Monday, June 3, 1997, from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m.

The Farewell Party will take place poolside on Friday, June 6, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.
