  MEETING LOCATION AND DATE

The Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) Astronomer Workshop will be held at NASA Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, California, February 29, 2008.

  KEY POINTS:
Date:  February 29, 2008
Location:  Moffett Field, CA

MISSION OBJECTIVE AND PURPOSE OF THE WORKSHOP

The objectives of the LCROSS mission are to advance the Vision for Space Exploration (VSE) by confirming the presence or absence of water ice in the permanently shadowed craters at the Moon's South Pole and to address science questions such as the nature of the polar regolith, impact cratering dynamics, etc. This workshop is designed for astronomers, to encourage the astronomy community to observe the LCROSS impacts with both ground- and space-based telescopes. The data collected from these observational assets will complement data collected from the LCROSS Shepherding Spacecraft and help ensure that maximum scientific and exploration value is derived from the LCROSS mission.

The LCROSS Project aims to help facilitate the preparation of astronomer observing proposals that will be submitted to various observatories by providing as much LCROSS-relevant information to the astronomers as possible. In this manner, the LCROSS Project will assist astronomers with the development of observing plans and proposals. The LCROSS Observation Campaign Coordinator will also facilitate the submission of a NASA LASER (Lunar Advanced Science and Exploration Research) proposal next year to cover time and travel expenses incurred by astronomers who have submitted successful observing proposals.

For more information about the purpose and scope of the meeting, view the workshop agenda.

More information about the LCROSS mission is available at the mission website at lcross.arc.nasa.gov.

Foreign nationals without U.S. identification must contact the local organizing chair (Jennifer Heldmann, [email protected]) as soon as possible for additional badging instructions.

Lodging is available either onsite at the NASA Ames Lodge or in nearby hotels.
