MEETING LOCATION AND DATE |
||||||||||
The LEAG Workshop on Sustaining Lunar Exploration will be held November 16–19, 2009, at the Lunar and Planetary Institute, located in the Universities Space Research Association (USRA) building, 3600 Bay Area Boulevard, Houston, Texas. |
KEY POINTS: |
|||||||||
PURPOSE AND SCOPE | ||||||||||
As NASA prepares to return to the Moon, learning from history is important for ensuring that a sustainable and long-term lunar return is possible. The Apollo program was not sustainable. The purpose of this workshop is to bring together academic, governmental, and private sector interests to focus on the sustainability theme of the LEAG-coordinated Lunar Exploration Roadmap. The meeting will incorporate the results from the latest missions (especially the LRO/LCROSS mission) to ensure that the framework for a sustainable presence is established early in this next era of lunar exploration. |
||||||||||
WORKSHOP FORMAT | ||||||||||
The three-and-one-half day workshop will consist of contributed and invited oral presentations and contributed poster presentations centered on questions relevant to the workshop theme of sustaining lunar exploration. The meeting will be predominantly technical sessions with a town hall meeting, panel discussion, and poster session in the evenings. The town hall meeting will focus on input to the NRC study on micro/partial gravity. The open panel discussion will focus on the sustainability theme of the Lunar Exploration Roadmap. Posters will be on display throughout the meeting with an evening dedicated to poster presentations. The meeting will, as in previous years, be organized around questions and include the first results from the LRO/LCROSS mission. The preliminary meeting schedule is now available. |

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS | ||||||||||
Researchers in scientific and engineering disciplines, entrepreneurs, and commercial companies appropriate to the purpose and scope of this meeting are encouraged to submit abstracts for oral and poster presentation. Abstracts should be centered around session topics and key questions. All abstracts, whether invited or contributed, must be submitted electronically to the Lunar and Planetary Institute via the electronic submission form by 5:00 p.m. (CDT) on Thursday, September 10, 2009 (see timezone map). Abstracts will be limited to one page, including graphics, tables, and references, and MUST be submitted in PDF format. Templates and detailed instructions for formatting and submitting your abstract are provided. NOTE: It is in your best interest to submit early to allow for possible technical problems or delays in transmission. Please do not wait until the last minute to access the system; access to the web form will terminate at 5:00 p.m. CDT, Thursday, September 10, 2009. The program and abstracts will be available in electronic format and accessible via the meeting website by October 2, 2009. These files will be in PDF format. Authors should check the online program to find out where their abstract has been scheduled. |

WORKSHOP PRODUCT | ||||||||||
The results of the meeting, especially the discussions, will identify exploration enablers (technology, ideas, partnerships, etc.) that will be incorporated into the Lunar Exploration Roadmap and presented in a white paper to NASA and the broader community. The final meeting report, including abstracts, session summaries, and a list of meeting participants, will be published for the community on the LEAG website. |

NOTE ABOUT THE SPONSORS AND ORGANIZING COMMITTEE | ||||||||||
The Lunar and Planetary Institute (LPI) was created to foster lunar and planetary science and the exploration of the solar system. The Lunar Exploration Analysis Group (LEAG) is a community-based interdisciplinary forum that analyzes scientific, engineering, technology, and operational issues associated with lunar exploration to support the vision for space exploration; it reports its findings and analyses to the NASA advisory council. The executive committee of LEAG forms the organizing committee of this workshop along with the President of the Space Resources Roundtable and the Project Scientist of the LRO mission. It includes representatives from science, ISRU, exploration systems, and commerce. The committee will help write the syntheses of the discussions. |
