The Curiosity Rover Science Team Press Briefing will be held on Monday, March 18, 12:00 noon CDT (1:00 p.m. EDT, GMT –5) to 1:15 p.m. CDT (2:15 p.m. EDT, GMT –5) in Montgomery Ballroom A. Panelists will be Jim Bell (Arizona State University, Tempe), co-investigator for the Mast Camera, Mars Hand Lens Imager, and Mars Descent Imager investigations; Maxim Litvak (Science Research Institute, Moscow, Russia), deputy principal investigator for the Dynamic Albedo of Neutrons investigation; Melissa Rice (California Institute of Technology, Pasadena), science team collaborator; and Mariek Schmidt (Brock University, Saint Catherines, Ontario, Canada), participating scientist.

GRAIL/LRO Press Briefing at LPSC

The GRAIL press briefing is now the GRAIL/LRO press briefing. This event will be held on Tuesday, March 19, 12:00 noon CDT (1:00 p.m. EDT, GMT –5) to 1:15 p.m. CDT (2:15 p.m. EDT, GMT –5) in The Woodlands Room. The panelists will be Maria Zuber (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge), GRAIL principal investigator; Kurt Retherford (Southwest Research Institute, San Antonio), principal investigator, Lyman Alpha Mapping Project (LAMP); and Mark Robinson (Arizona State University, Tempe), principal investigator, Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC).

LPSC Shuttle Information Now Available

The conference shuttle information is now available. There are three separate routes--Blue, Green, and Red--based on the location of the hotels. There is a hotel list by shuttle route and a detailed schedule of each route.

LPSC Special Sessions have been announced. This year's conference will include special sessions on results from the Mars Science Laboratory; GRAIL's exploration of the Moon’s interior; Dawn, Vesta, and the HED connection; and early differentiation of planetary bodies across the solar system.

LPSC Microbloggers

This year interested participants are being invited to apply to be one of our official LPSC microbloggers during the week of the conference. A limited number of selected participants will be given password-protected access to a dedicated WiFi network that will be available in the oral session rooms (Monday 8:00 a.m. through Friday 5:00 p.m.) Selected participants will help provide extended social media coverage of the conference, and applications will be accepted from the working press, college students, scientists, retired professionals, etc. The application deadline is February 18, 2013.

Requests for Peripheral Meeting Space

LPSC Peripheral Policy —

Meetings held in conjunction with LPSC must meet certain criteria in order to garner the financial and resource support of LPI and LPSC. Due to limited space and resources, and the increased number of peripheral meetings, requests for space and preferred dates are not guaranteed.

All requests must be submitted using the request form and must be received by 5:00 p.m. U.S. Central Standard Time (GMT –6) January 18, 2013. Requests received after this time will not be considered.

Criteria for Meeting Space Requests —

Must not be an independent science session to be held within the scope of LPSC

Must discuss science or mission planning activities, education/public outreach activities, or business matters of mission activities

Are not scheduled during the regular technical sessions of LPSC. Meetings will only be scheduled between Sunday, March 17, and Friday, March 22, 2013

LPSC Rooms are Now Available at The Woodlands Waterway Marriott Hotel

The Woodlands Waterway Marriott Hotel is holding a block of rooms for LPSC participants at a special rate of $199.00 per night. The hotel is located at 1601 Lake Robbins Drive, The Woodlands, Texas, just north of Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH). The Woodlands is located in Montgomery County.

Special LPSC Room Rate — The special LPSC rate is $199.00 per night with complimentary Internet access, single or double occupancy, plus applicable taxes (currently 15%). For an occupancy tax exemption, guests are required to show an occupancy tax exemption form in addition to proper government identification at check-in. There is no charge for children 18 years and younger when they share a room with parent(s) and utilize existing beds. A limited number of handicap-accessible rooms are available; descriptions are available on the reservation form.

To accommodate guests who wish to share the cost of a room with a roommate, the hotel has set aside all two-double-bed guest rooms for LPSC participants. These rooms will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis as inventory allows. No more than four adults are allowed per room.

Check-in time is 4:00 p.m.; check-out is 11:00 a.m. Guests arriving prior to check-in will be accommodated as rooms become available. The hotel will accommodate late check-outs with prior notice and subject to space availability.

The special rate is only available through 6:00 p.m. U.S. Central Standard Time (GMT –6), February 17, 2013. Historically, rooms at the Marriott sell out quickly, so participants are encouraged to make their reservations early.

Marriott telephone reservations at 1-800-262-1509. Specify “Lunar and Planetary Science.”

Reservations must be guaranteed with a major credit card or accompanied by a first night’s deposit. All reserved guest rooms are guaranteed until 6:00 p.m. on the day of arrival. Guests planning to arrive after 6:00 p.m. should notify the hotel at the time the room is booked. If travel plans should change due to delayed flights or other circumstances, guests should contact the hotel directly at 281-367-9797.

Cancellation Policy — Cancellations may be made without penalty by contacting the hotel directly at 281-367-9797 prior to 6:00 p.m. on the day of arrival.

“No Show” Policy — Guests who do not check in by 6:00 p.m. on the day of arrival without prior notice to the hotel risk forfeiture of the room as well as forfeiture of the deposit.

Please note: The hotel is a non-smoking property, which includes all public areas and guest rooms.
