The Scientific Organizing Committee, on behalf of Dr. Wes Huntress, Associate Administrator for the Office of Space Science, is conducting a workshop on the issue "Martian Meteorites: Where Do We Stand and Where Are We Going?"

The purpose of the workshop will be to assess where we stand regarding the martian meteorite ALH 84001, and to identify key research activities involving meteorites, terrestrial samples, and Mars that will illuminate our understanding of the issues raised by ALH 84001. These issues include, but are not limited to, the possibility of life on Mars at any time during its history.

WHERE AND WHEN

The workshop will be held November 2-4, 1998, in the Lecture Hall at the Lunar and Planetary Institute, 3600 Bay Area Boulevard, Houston, Texas. Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. on November 2; technical sessions will begin the same day at 8:30 a.m. The workshop will adjourn at noon on Wednesday, November 4.

PROGRAM FORMAT

A preliminary program is available online, viewable in PDF format. (To download a free copy of the Adobe Acrobat Reader, click here.)

The workshop will place heavy emphasis on discussion centered around a limited number of subtopics. A half-day session will be devoted to each subtopic. Each session will begin with a 40-minute invited overview presentation followed by a 20-minute discussion period.

These overview presentations will be followed by 20-minute invited talks that will allow the speakers to use any and all data to make their case, not just data developed by their own research team. These speakers, along with the overview speaker, will then form a discussion panel. To encourage and enhance the panel discussion, audience members will be allowed the opportunity to show one slide to make a point.

Contributed presentations will be limited to an evening poster session.

Speakers will have dual slide and overhead projectors available to support their presentations. Speakers will need to complete an audio-visual cue sheet and give it to the projectionist at least 15 minutes before their session begins. The Lecture Hall at LPI has a rear-screen projection system; speakers who bring their own carousels are requested to load them accordingly.

The poster session will be held in the Berkner and Hess Rooms at LPI on Monday evening following the afternoon session. If you are giving a poster presentation you will have a space 44 × 44 (112 × 112 cm) for display. Pushpins will be available at the registration desk for poster installation. Posters may be installed on the display boards beginning at 7:30 a.m. on Monday morning, and must be removed by noon on Wednesday at the conclusion of the workshop.

If you have any questions or special requests concerning support for your oral or poster presentation, please contact LeBecca Simmons at simmons@lpi.usra.edu no later than October 4.

SOCIAL EVENT

A reception will be held on Monday evening from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. following the afternoon technical session. The reception and poster session will be held at the same time to allow workshop participants enough time to discuss the poster presentations in a relaxed environment. Workshop participants and their guests are invited; light refreshments will be served.

REGISTRATION

A fee of $60 ($40 for students) will be assessed each participant to cover workshop services. Participants must submit the electronic preregistration form or print out the downloadable preregistration form and mail it to the LPI. You must preregister and prepay by October 2, 1998, to avoid the $20 late fee. Foreign participants who state on the preregistration form that they have a currency exchange problem may pay in cash at the meeting and avoid the $20 late fee if they return the form by October 2, 1998. Requests for cancellation and a refunded fee will be accepted through October 23, 1998.

Walk-in registration will be available beginning at 7:30 a.m. on Monday, November 2, 1998. The rate for walk-in registration will be $80 ($60 for students), which includes the $20 late fee mentioned above. A continental breakfast will be served during this hour prior to the start of the technical presentations on Monday and for one-half hour (beginning at 8:00 a.m.) on Tuesday and Wednesday.

LOGISTICS

A list of local hotels and a local area map are included and are also available on the workshop Web site. Parking space is limited at the Institute so participants are encouraged to car-pool from the local hotels.

CONTACT INFORMATION

Questions regarding the technical content of the meeting should be directed to David Black (black@lpi.usra.edu).
