WHEN AND WHERE
You are invited to attend the 64th Annual Meeting of the Meteoritical Society, to be held September 10–14, 2001, at the Gregorian Pontifical University, Vatican City State.

Location:  All sessions for the meeting will be held at the Vatican's Gregorian Pontifical University

      Pontificia Universitas Gregoriana
      Piazza della Pilotta, 4
      00187 ROMA (Italia)
Telephone:  (+39) 06.6701.1 (week of meeting only)

Though holding Vatican extraterritorial status, the University meeting site is not at the Vatican City itself, but in the heart of Rome's historic city center, just two blocks from the Trevi Fountain and a short walk from the Forum, Colosseum, and Pantheon.

Transportation:  Rome is served by two international airports. Leonardo da Vinci (aka Fiumicino), about 18 miles (30 km) southwest of the city, is used by most of the scheduled flights. Ciampino, about 9 miles (15 km) southeast, is used mainly by charter flights, though scheduled flights from some European cities (such as London Stansted) are also available. Train and bus service to Rome is available from both airports, including an express train from Fiumicino to the main Rome train station, Termini.

From North America direct scheduled flights to Rome are operated by Delta (from New York), US Air (from Philadelphia), Continental (from Newark), Northwest (from Detroit, Los Angeles, Miami, and New York), and Canadian Airlines (from Montreal and Toronto). Some of these flights are codeshared with Alitalia. Flying time is about 8.5 hours from New York, about 13 hours from Los Angeles. From Europe, most national airlines and Alitalia offer direct scheduled flights to Rome.

There is direct train service from Paris, Basel, Munich, Vienna, and many other European cities into Rome's central train station, Termini. The station is not far from the meeting site and the hotels. It should be an inexpensive (approximately $5) taxi ride, or about a 20-minute walk (up and down hills, however!) from Termini to the Gregorian University. For fares, information, and reservations please contact our official travel agency, Kuoni Incoming SpA, via e-mail at

[email protected].

Weather:  September is usually warm but on occasion it can be unpleasantly hot. The average temperature is 79°F/26°C in the daytime, 62°F/17°C at night. Heat waves do occur, however, and most public buildings (including the meeting site) are not air conditioned. Note also that churches and other points of interest will require "proper dress" for entry (no sleeveless shirts, no shorts). Pack accordingly.

MEETING FORMAT
We received a record-breaking response to our call for abstracts and, as a result, have a record-breaking program of oral and poster presentations. We regret that not everyone who requested an oral presentation could be accommodated, and the meeting organizers apologize in advance for any inconvenience this may cause to those concerned.

Oral Presentations:  Oral sessions will be held in the Gregorian Pontifical University from Monday morning through Friday evening, except for Wednesday, which will be devoted to special events and excursions. The sessions are scheduled from 08.00 to 13.30 and again from 16.00 to 19.30. This unusual format follows the rhythms of Roman life. Most restaurants do not open for the mid-day meal until 13.00, and the evening meal typically does not begin until after 20.00. Technical sessions are expected to cover a wide range of topics in meteoritics and planetary science, including three special sessions:  "Laboratory Simulations of Circumstellar Dust Analogs:  Expectations for Comet Nucleus Encounters," "Mars from the Meteorite Perspective," and "Space-Borne Studies of NEOs."

Poster Presentations:  The poster sessions will be held in the Central Atrium of the Gregorian Pontifical University, directly adjacent to the rooms holding the oral sessions. Posters will be displayed for the entire meeting and each poster is assigned a formal poster session that will be held from 10.00 to 11.00 each day of the conference except Wednesday. Poster presenters should put up their posters as soon as possible on Monday morning and plan to be at their poster for their assigned formal session. The poster sessions will be in conjunction with the mid-morning break, during which coffee, tea, and light refreshments will be served. Poster display space available for authors is 1 meter square.

HOTEL ACCOMMODATIONS
Hotel rooms were held until July 1, but can no longer be guaranteed. If you have not yet arranged for housing, we strongly recommend you do so soon, as hotel space can be tight in September. You may wish to contact your own travel agent, or our agents in Rome, Kuoni Incoming, may be able to help you find housing. Elena Ripamonti is handling our meeting at Kuoni; you can contact her c/o:

      Fax:  (++39)-06-68 38 923
      E-mail:  [email protected]

Remember that all sessions will be held at the Gregorian Pontifical University in the heart of Rome's historic city center, just two blocks from the Trevi Fountain. This location is NOT close to Vatican City.

REGISTRATION AND SOCIAL EVENTS
Registration will begin at 16.00 on Sunday, September 9, 2001, and will be followed by a reception at 18.00. Both the registration and reception will be held at the main hall of the Gregorian Pontifical University. The annual banquet will be held on the evening of Thursday, September 13, 2001, at the Fantasie di Trastevere. The Barringer Invitational Lecture will be presented at the banquet by Dava Sobel, author of Longitude and Galileo's Daughter. Bus transportation to the banquet will be provided. Vegetarian tables (each table seats four) will be provided; be sure to indicate on your registration form if you wish to sit at a vegetarian table. A detailed schedule of buses will be provided with the registration materials.

A reception for student award recipients and their research advisors will be hosted by the Barringer Crater Company. Details will be posted at registration.

GUEST ACTIVITIES AND EXCURSIONS
Rome is one of the world's great historical centers and the site of one of the most magnificent concentrations of archeological, artistic, and architectural treasures in the world. A schedule of morning and afternoon trips during the days of the meeting have been arranged by our tour company (Kuoni Incoming SpA) at special rates for Meteoritical Society attendees and registered guests. Information about these and other multiple-day tours offered by Kuoni can be accessed via the meeting Web site (http://geoweb.gg.utk.edu/2001/metsoc2001.html) and Kuoni representatives will be available at the meeting registration desk for booking tours. We hope to be able to arrange attendance at the weekly Papal Audience on Wednesday morning; Wednesday afternoon excursions will include a choice of trips to the Vatican Museum, Tivoli, Ostia Antica, Castel Gandolfo, and Tours of Historic Rome. Sign-up sheets will be available at registration.

REGISTRATION AND FEES
The preregistration deadline for the meeting is August 1, 2001. After August 1, 2001, registration will only be possible on site at the meeting. Those registering by credit card can register electronically via the electronic registration form. Credit card payments will be automatically converted to Euros by your bank. Those registering using any other method of payment should mail or fax a copy of the downloadable registration form to Guy Consolmagno at the Specola Vaticana address given below.

Payment must be made in Euros or a Euro currency; checks should be made out to the Specola Vaticana. We regret that we cannot accept payment in currencies that float relative to the Euro. You can pay by Visa, Mastercard, American Express, or check. Note that credit cards will be processed and billed to Kuoni Incoming SpA.

Cancellation Policy:  A 15% cancellation fee will be charged on cancellations received before September 1. No refunds can be made after September 1.
