  WHEN AND WHERE
The 68th Annual Meeting of the Meteoritical Society will be held from Monday, September 12, to Friday, September 16, 2005, in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Gatlinburg is the popular gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the most visited national park in the United States. Gatlinburg offers a peaceful, safe environment with more than 100 restaurants, as well as shops, arts, crafts, and entertainment within easy walking distance or accessible by trolley cars. The timeframe for the meeting, between the summer season and peak fall tree colors, was selected for minimum tourist traffic and comfortable weather. Seasonal temperatures during September vary between 53° and 84°F (12° and 29°C).

Plenary, oral, and poster sessions will be held in meeting facilities at the Glenstone Lodge, which will also provide the primary accommodations for meeting attendees.

  ACCOMMODATIONS
We are sorry to inform you that all rooms in the Glenstone Lodge have been sold out. September is a busy month for tourism in Gatlinburg. However, the organizers have made a special deal with a hotel of equal quality (Holiday Inn) that adjoins the Glenstone Lodge, an additional walk of only 66 feet (20 meters). The rooms are available for a special rate of only $80/night (breakfast buffet included for up to two persons per room) from September 11–16. This is slightly less than the rate at the Glenstone Lodge, in part to compensate for your inconvenience.

A limited block of hotel rooms has been booked at this companion hotel, but due to high demand, we strongly recommend that you make your reservations ASAP. The organizers will initiate these reservations immediately when you contact them directly. You can use the same accommodation form, faxing it to 865-974-2368 or e-mailing it to dstaylor@utk.edu. You will be sent a confirmation immediately upon receipt of your request.

For more information, contact Dawn Taylor at dstaylor@utk.edu, 865-235-5849 (phone), or 865-974-2368 (fax).

  TRANSPORTATION
Gatlinburg is serviced by Knoxville's McGee-Tyson Airport (TYS), which has direct flights from Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Detroit, Houston, Memphis, Minneapolis, New York (LaGuardia), Newark, Orlando, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Tampa, and Washington (Dulles and National). The following airlines or their affiliates fly into Knoxville: American Eagle, Continental Express, Delta (providing the most extensive service), Independence Air, Northwest, United Express, and US Airways Express. The airport is ~50 miles (~80 km) from Gatlinburg.

Van service will be provided to shuttle meeting participants to and from the airport (see schedule below) at no cost. If you arrive during hours when vans are not running, taxi service from the airport to Gatlinburg costs $65.00, plus $2.00 for each additional person. However, we recommend rental cars (Alamo, Avis, Budget, Hertz, National, and Thrify are available in the terminal), especially if you wish to take advantage of the National Park and the many attractions in the surrounding area. Maps for those who drive are available on the Gatlinburg meeting site.

Shuttle van schedule:
Saturday, September 10 — noon to 9:00 p.m.
Sunday, September 11 — 9:00 am to 6:00 p.m.
Friday, September 16 — noon to 6:00 p.m.

  SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM AND ABSTRACTS
Registration will begin at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, September 11, and be followed by a welcome reception and barbecue on the grounds of Glenstone Lodge. Morning and afternoon oral sessions will be held in the Glenstone Lodge from Monday morning through Friday noon, except for Thursday afternoon. Poster sessions will be held on Monday and Tuesday evenings. Technical sessions will cover a wide range of topics on meteoritics and planetary science. A symposium honoring Ross Taylor's 80th birthday will focus on lunar sample studies in the context of crustal evolution and remote sensing (Wednesday, 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.). Other special sessions will focus on supernovae and nucleosynthesis (Monday, 8:30 a.m.), and nucleosynthesis by local irradiation (Monday, 9:45 a.m.).

The program and abstracts have been posted on this Web site. These files are in PDF format, viewable with Adobe Acrobat Reader. MAPS abstract volumes will be mailed prior to the meeting, and participants are encouraged to bring these to the meeting. In an effort to reduce expenses, Council has approved that only abstract CDs will be provided in registration packets.

  ORAL AND POSTER PRESENTATIONS
Laptop computers, LCD projectors, and overhead projectors will be provided; no slide projectors will be available. All PowerPoint presentations must be downloaded in the speaker ready room at least one day prior to the scheduled presentation. Presentations may be transferred to the conference server using a memory stick or CD. Once presentations have been uploaded, no further corrections are permitted. Presentations may also be uploaded in advance of the meeting by FTP; directions for connecting to the meeting server were sent with author notification letters.

Poster presentations will be allotted spaces measuring 4 × 4 feet.

  STUDENT TRAVEL GRANTS
Funds to support travel of selected students have been made available by the NASA Cosmochemistry Program, the Barringer Crater Company, Pallasite Press, and the Planetary Studies Foundation. Students who have received travel grants can pick up their checks on arrival at the meeting.

  GUEST ACTIVITIES AND EXCURSIONS
Gatlinburg offers abundant activities and shopping, and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is known for its spectacular flora, 900 miles of hiking trails, and stunning mountain vistas. Numerous attractions, such as Ripley's Aquarium, Cherokee Indian Reservation, Harrah's Casino, and Dollywood theme park are within easy reach. More information, as well as contacts for tours, will be provided in registration packets.

Welcome Party:  A welcome barbecue will be held Sunday, September 11, beginning at 6:00 p.m. on the grounds of the Glenstone Lodge. The meal will feature barbecued chicken, pork chops, and ribeye steaks, plus vegetarian entrees, drinks, and live bluegrass music.

Dinner to Honor Professor S. Ross Taylor:  A dinner in honor of Ross Taylor will be held Wednesday, September 14, at 7:00 p.m. (not included in registration fee). The dinner tickets will be sold at the registration desk on Sunday afternoon. For more information, please contact Marc Norman.

Meeting Excursion and Banquet:  A bus tour (~1.5 hour ride) to Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina, is included in the registration fee for all participants. The Thursday afternoon trip will include a tour of the Vanderbilt's house (America's largest home) and gardens, a visit and tasting at the Biltmore winery, and the annual banquet at Deer Park Restaurant on the estate grounds. Because of the afternoon tours, dress for the banquet will be informal. Meal selection may be done in advance using the preregistration form.

Post-Meeting Field Trip:  A field trip planned for September 16–18 (Friday–Sunday) will visit impact craters at Middlesboro, Kentucky, and Flynn Creek, Tennessee. Middlesboro and Flynn Creek are complex craters, 5 km and 3.6 km in diameter, respectively. Both craters are excellent sites for collecting samples. The trip, led by Keith Milam and Bill Deane, is limited to 30 participants. The cost ($280/$230 single/double occupancy) includes all transportation, lodging, and food costs. NOTE:  If you choose double occupancy, indicate on the registration form the name of the person with whom you will be sharing a room. The organizing committee is not responsible for assigning roommates.

The trip will leave from Gatlinburg on Friday afternoon, and participants will be returned to the Knoxville Airport on Sunday by 6:00 p.m. If no convenient flight out is available that evening, the Knoxville Airport Hilton (865-970-4300) offers accommodations close by. More details will be provided in the registration packets of trip participants.

  OBTAINING A VISA
Foreign participants may require a visa to enter the United States. You may not need a visa if you are a citizen of any country in the Visa Waiver Program and have a machine-readable passport. Countries currently in the Visa Waiver Program are listed at http://travel.state.gov/visa/temp/without/without_1990.html. If you already have a U.S. visa, check the expiration date to make sure that the visa will not expire before the planned travel dates. More information about visitor visas is available on the Gatlinburg meeting site, and on the Department of State's Visa Services Web site.

All visa applicants should try to submit their application at least three months prior to travel. If you have not received a response or decision within 30 days of submitting a visa application, you should visit the National Academy of Science's Visa Web site, and fill out the visa questionnaire. NAS staff members review the questionnaires each week to identify applications that are still pending and report each such case to the State Department until the case has been resolved.

The meeting coordinators will send official letters of invitation to foreign registrants, to be filed with visa applications. These letters may be requested at least four months in advance by sending a message to metsoc2005@utk.edu, including your full name, date of birth, address, country, and passport number.
