71st Annual Meteoritical Society Meeting
INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS

Deadline for Electronic Submission:  May 7, 2008, 5:00 p.m. U.S. Central Daylight Time

General Instructions
Abstracts should be in Microsoft Word (PC or Mac) or rich text format. PostScript files will be accepted ONLY from those authors who are unable to submit in any other format. Authors submitting PostScript files will be contacted by the LPI to provide a file containing the text of their abstract so it won't have to be reinput for production of the volume.

Download the appropriate template from the list provided. Using the format provided in the template, prepare your abstract for submission.

Abstracts will be limited to ONE SINGLE column for publication in Meteoritics & Planetary Science. The dimensions of your ENTIRE abstract (including title, authors, affiliations, references, etc.) should be no more than 3.45 inches (~8.7 cm) wide by 9 inches (~23 cm) long. The templates reflect this format. Due to the size of the abstracts, figures often do not print well, and should be avoided. The journal office reserves the right to discard any graphic that is not legible or of poor quality. Abstracts submitted in violation of this requirement will not be published in the journal.

Use of Meteorite Names
All meteorite names appearing in abstracts must be officially accepted by the Nomenclature Committee (contact Dr. Michael Weisberg, Dept. of Physical Sciences, Kingsborough College of the City University of New York, 2001 Oriental Blvd., Brooklyn NY 11235, USA; phone:  718-368-5769; fax:  718-368-4876; e-mail:   meteorite@kingsborough.edu; or visit the Meteoritical Bulletin).

We recommend submission of new meteorites that require approval to the Committee by April 16. The committee cannot guarantee that meteorites submitted after this time will be processed and approved by the time of the abstract deadline. To check the publication status of any meteorite, please use the "Quick Meteorite Name Search". Existing meteorite names should conform to the spelling given in the Meteoritical Bulletin meteorite database or the Catalogue of Meteorites, fifth edition (M. M. Grady, 2000, Cambridge University Press). The full names of meteorites should be used in titles, subheadings, and at first mention in the text. Abbreviations, including those published in the Antarctic Meteorite Newsletter and the Meteoritical Bulletin, may be used in tables and elsewhere. Note that in the abbreviated form, there should be a space between the place name and the number. In addition, Antarctic meteorites recovered prior to 1981 may have an A after the blank space (but as of 2006 it is optional). In the abbreviated form, the Yamato meteorites should have a dash between "Y" and the number. See the list of standard abbreviations and examples for their proper usage.

Abstracts submitted in violation of these requirements will NOT be published in the journal. A representative of the Meteorite Nomenclature Committee will be reviewing the submitted abstracts to make certain that all authors are in compliance with these policies. The program committee reserves the right to reject any abstract found to be in violation of these rules.

Note Regarding Fonts
You are urged to use fonts common to Macintosh and PC platforms, i.e., Times, Times New Roman, Helvetica, or Arial for text; Symbol for mathematical symbols and Greek letters. The electronic version of your abstract that appears on line will be a PDF file. If the PDF conversion program does not recognize the font you have used, it will have to use the best-available choice from its substitution table and the final outcome may be corrupted.

OTHER IMPORTANT THINGS TO NOTE

PostScript Files
As noted above, PostScript submissions will only be accepted from those authors who are unable to submit Word or RTF files. Authors choosing to submit PostScript files will be contacted to provide the text of their abstract so it doesn't have to be reinput for production of the volume. PostScript files MUST be prepared in accordance with the formatting instructions given above (refer to the sample abstracts for guidance).

Asian Authors
To avoid technical problems in translation between different versions of Word, authors using Word for Asian format should submit their abstracts as RTF files.

Submitting Your Abstract
After you have prepared the file containing your abstract, you are ready to submit it. Your file MUST be on the same machine as your Web browser, and you cannot leave the file open or the data will not transfer successfully. Go to the electronic abstract submission form and follow the instructions. The form will take approximately 5 minutes to complete. Once you have completed the form and have clicked on the "Send to LPI" button, the system will respond with a screen that informs you that your abstract has been successfully submitted and assigns you an abstract number. Take note of this abstract number. You will need to know it to pay your abstract fee (see below), and you will need to refer to it in any correspondence regarding your abstract. If you don't see the confirmation screen within a reasonable amount of time (no more than 5 minutes), or if you have any questions or need further assistance, please phone the LPI at 281-486-2142 or -2188, or send an e-mail message to publish@lpi.usra.edu.

After submitting your abstract, you will be directed to a secure page at which you can pay the $55.00 abstract fee being collected by the journal office. For more detailed information, please read the second announcement.

** NO REVISIONS ACCEPTED! **   Proof your abstract BEFORE you submit it; revisions will NOT be accepted! If you submit the same abstract more than once using the web form, we cannot guarantee that the correct version will be used. If there are any technical problems with the content of your abstract (for example, your file was corrupted), our staff will be desperately trying to contact you immediately, so it is CRUCIAL that you provide us with up-to-date contact information on the submission form. If you know that you will not be available to answer possible questions regarding your submission, please give us (in the "Comments" section of the submission form) the name of someone who can (and how we can reach them).
