MEETING LOCATION AND DATE

The 73rd Annual Meeting of the Meteoritical Society will be held July 26–30, 2009, in New York City, at the Park Central Hotel, close to Central Park in the heart of upper midtown Manhattan. The hotel is a 20-minute walk from the American Museum of Natural History, across the street from Carnegie Hall, and close to many subway lines.

KEY POINTS:
  When:

July 26–30, 2010
  Where:

New York City, NY

  ACCOMMODATIONS

We strongly encourage participants to stay at the conference hotel and to reserve rooms early. The room rate during the meeting is $159.00 per night (single) and $179.00 per night (double), plus local hotel taxes. The hotel will apply a favorable rate for participants who arrive a few days early or stay a few days afterward, subject to availability.

A direct link to the hotel reservation site is available at the New York meeting website.

  TRANSPORTATION

The city is accessible by train from Newark and JFK International Airports, and by taxi from LaGuardia Airport. Low-carbon-footprint train service is available from many points within 1000 miles of New York (Boston, Springfield MA; Washington, Baltimore, Atlanta, Chicago). Parking an automobile in midtown is not recommended.

  CLIMATE

The climate in New York in mid-summer may be hot and humid (>90°F is not unusual), but temperatures could be in the 80s (°F).

  SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM

Registration will begin on Sunday afternoon, July 25, at the hotel. A welcome reception is planned for 6:00–8:00 p.m. Sunday, at the American Museum of Natural History, featuring the Ross Hall of Meteorites. Technical sessions will cover a wide range of topics on meteoritics and planetary science. Oral sessions will be held from Monday morning through Friday afternoon, except for Wednesday morning, which will be devoted to invited talks. The awards ceremony and poster session will be held on Tuesday evening, with a second poster session on Thursday, if necessary. Since we expect sessions to last until Friday afternoon, a farewell party is planned. Many visitors will want to stay overnight in New York on the weekends, to take advantage of the many tourist opportunities.

  TRAVEL GRANTS

Travel grants will be made available to qualified students, recent Ph.D.s, and a number of scientists from countries with limited financial resources who are members of the Meteoritical Society. Applicants must be the sole or first author of an abstract to be presented at the meeting and must also submit a travel award application form to the LPI by the abstract deadline. More information will be included in the second announcement.

    EXCURSIONS, BANQUETS, AND GUEST ACTIVITIES

On Wednesday afternoon, July 28, a variety of customized excursions by city transit will be available to conference participants. These will include guided visits to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Hall of Planet Earth (and other Halls) at the American Museum of Natural History, the Rubin Museum of Tibetan Art, Broadway matinee(s), and visits yet to be determined. These will be based on the interests of local participants, and visitors familiar with the city who volunteer to lead. Participation, any fees, and logistics will be arranged with the leader of each individual tour.

A group dinner will be held Wednesday evening, July 28, at a venue yet to be determined. Transport will be by public transit or taxi, at participant discretion.

Organized guest activities will be available. See upcoming meeting announcements.

    PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP

Meteorites, Comets, Disks, and Planets, July 24–25.
This workshop will bring together an interdisciplinary group of (1) observers of extrasolar disks and planets, (2) experts in the physical modeling of disks in time and space, and (3) specialists in the physical, chemical, and isotopic properties of meteorites, comet samples, and planetary materials. Attendance will be limited to 140 people, with a 24-talk mixture of invited and contributed talks. The chair of the Workshop Scientific Organizing Committee is Dr. Mordecai-Mark Mac Low, Department of Astrophysics, American Museum of Natural History.

    POST-CONFERENCE FIELD TRIP

Sterling Hill Mine and Museum, July 31.
Dr. James Webster and Dr. Joe Boesenberg of the American Museum of Natural History, Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, will lead a day trip to the Sterling Hill Mining Museum, including an underground tour of this world-famous fluorescent mineral locality. Registration will be limited to the first 50 or 100 (one or two coach buses) to sign up before May 1, 2010. Cost is expected to be about $110.00, which includes admission to the site. The trip will take a full day, returning to the conference hotel in the early evening.

    FUTURE ANNOUNCEMENTS

More detailed information will be available in future announcements on this website (see schedule below), as well as on the New York meeting website.

To subscribe to an e-mail notification list to receive updates and reminders relating to the meeting, please submit an Indication of Intent by March 29, 2010. Please make sure to indicate on the form if you plan to participate in the field trip.

If you are interested in joining the Meteoritical Society, please visit the Society's main website for more information.

    FOREIGN TRAVEL

Travelers other than those from Canada and 27 visa-waiver countries (mostly western European countries, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand) may require a visa to enter the USA. We recommend applying three months or more in advance for a visa, since U.S. consulates are requiring personal interviews for most visa applicants. Please consult the International Visitors Office, which provides detailed information for scientific visitors.
