On behalf of the Meteoritical Society we are delighted to invite you
to attend the 60th Meteoritical Society Meeting, to be held from
Monday, July 21, through Friday, July 25, 1997, at the Maui Prince Hotel on
the beautiful island of Maui, Hawai'i. The meeting is being hosted by the
University of Hawai'i at Manoa, which is in Honolulu on the island of Oahu.
Location: Maui is the second largest of the eight main islands in
the Hawai'ian chain. The island of Maui formed from two separate
volcanos that were later joined at the isthmus of central Maui. The West Maui
mountains are extinct, but dormant Haleakala on the east side sits on the
very edge of the hot spot and last erupted 200 years ago. Click here for
an area map (PDF format) to the Maui Prince Hotel.
Weather: Expect daytime temperatures in the upper 80s°F and
low 90s°F (~30°-34°C); nighttime temperatures will be in
the low 70s°F to low 80s°F (~22°-28°C). Rains are
infrequent in summer and don't last long. At higher elevations expect
more rain and cooler temperatures: ~30°F (15°C) cooler on Haleakala.
We have received 275 abstracts. The Program Committee has
scheduled 201 oral presentations, 58 poster presentations, and 16
title-only abstracts. Plenary sessions will consist of presentations
on presolar grains in meteorites, global effects of the K/T bolide,
and results of current missions.
Oral Presentations: Oral sessions will be held in two parallel
sessions each day in the Wailea Salon and the Makena Salon of the Maui
Prince Hotel from Monday morning through Friday noon, except for
Wednesday afternoon. Each oral presentation will be limited to 10 minutes.
Available projection equipment for oral presentations includes two 35-mm slide
projectors, two overhead projectors for transparencies, two screens, a
pointer, a lectern, and a lavaliere microphone. A slide-preview room will be
located at the rear of the Makena Salon. Presenters should fill out
a Dual-Projection Visual Aids Schedule, which was enclosed in the final
announcement and will be available at the meeting, and give it to the
projectionists before the first talk of each session.
Poster Presentations: There will be a formal poster session from
5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 22, in the Hale Makena. Beer and wine will
be available outside the Prince Ballroom from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. and in
Hale Makena from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Posters will remain on display through
the entire meeting. Authors may install their posters beginning at 4:00
p.m. on Sunday, July 20. Poster display space is 4' x 4' (122 cm x 122 cm).
The background color of the boards is gray. Posters can be mounted
using velcro tabs, which will be available in the Hale Makena. All posters must
be removed by 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 25, or the poster material will
be discarded.
Abstract Volume and Online Services: The meeting abstracts
will be a supplemental issue of
Meteoritics & Planetary Science. It will be mailed to
all regular Meteoritics & Planetary Science subscribers
and, in addition, will be part of the registration package at the meeting.
The program and abstracts
for the 60th Meteoritical Society Meeting are on line in PDF format,
viewable with the Adobe Acrobat reader, which can be downloaded free
of charge from
Adobe.
The Maui Prince Hotel is now full. An alternative hotel is the Aston Wailea Resort (808-879-1922), located about 2 miles from the Maui
Prince Hotel. When making a reservation, please mention the Meteoritical
Society Meeting to get the discounted room rate of $115/night + tax.
Please note there is no organized transportation between the two hotels.
Condominiums are also available in Wailea, 3 miles (5 km) to the north, and
Kihei, 7 miles (11 km) to the north. For information about condominiums,
e-mail Jeff Taylor at
[email protected].
For those staying at the Maui Prince Hotel, the Prince Kids Club
offers a program for children 5-12 years old. Although charges have now
been instituted for the morning program for regular guests, the Maui
Prince Hotel will offer the Prince Kids Club on a complimentary basis from
9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for meeting participants only, from July
17-19 and from July 21-25. An extended program from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
is available for $20 per child, including lunch. Limited space is
available; therefore, reservations are required by July 1.
Call the hotel at 1-800-368-8444 and request the Concierge Desk at the
Maui Prince Hotel.
E-mail access will be provided by the NASA Integrated Systems
Network during the Meteoritical Society Meeting and Chondrites Workshop.
Telephone messages for meeting participants should be left on the
hotel voice-mail service provided to each room. During sessions, urgent
messages can be left at the meeting registration desk at 808-875-5875.
The Maui Prince Hotel is located in an isolated area at the end of
the road in Makena, about 20 miles (~30 km) south of Kahului Airport (a
35-minute drive). Transportation between the hotel and airport is available
by taxi, shuttle service, and rental car. Taxis are expensive (at least
$50). Shuttle service is efficient and can be arranged in advance. The price
depends on the number of passengers and ranges from $20 for one
passenger to about $6 per person if there are 7 or more passengers in the
van. The two main services take reservations, but claim to arrive within 10
minutes of a call from the airport between 5:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. The
services are SpeediShuttle (808-875-8070) and Airport Shuttle
(808-661-6667).
We expect that most participants will arrange to share rental
cars because there is no public transportation in the Kihei-Wailea-Makena
area of Maui and few restaurants outside the Maui Prince Hotel within
easy walking distance. Discounted rates have been negotiated with four
rental car companies (Budget, Dollar, Hertz, and National). Weekly rates are
listed below. A 4.167% state excise tax plus a $2 per day state surcharge will
be added; use the group codes and phone numbers listed to qualify for
these special rates.
Most airlines fly directly to Honolulu, 100 miles (~160 km) west of
Maui, but some fly directly into Kahului Airport. Interisland service
is provided by Aloha and Hawai'ian Airlines. The official airline for
the meeting is American Airlines, which has several direct
flights to Maui from the U.S. mainland and numerous flights to Honolulu.
They are offering discount rates for participants in the U.S. and Canada:
a 5% discount on all fares and a 10% discount on 7-day-advance-purchase
fares. For reservations call 800-433-1790 and give the STAR ID number S 8377AB, or give this number to your travel agent. Early reservations
are recommended.
Besides exploring Maui and relaxing on the beautiful beaches, there
are many organized activities for visitors: a snorkeling adventure to
Molokini, including lunch and a sail in a catamaran, which departs from the
hotel's beach; tours by minibus to Haleakala and Hana; and helicopter tours
of Maui. Explore the depths by submarine. Swim and snorkel off the island
of Lanai. All these activities and more can be arranged in the lobby of the
Maui Prince Hotel. There will be no technical sessions scheduled for
Wednesday afternoon, so meeting attendees and their guests will be free to
participate in any of the activities available in the area.
Tours will be available on Wednesday, July 23, beginning at 2:00 p.m.
to the Maui High Performance Computing Center (MHPCC), which is a
state-of-the-art supercomputing facility located in Kihei and managed by
the University of New Mexico. Ranked as one of the top computer centers
in the world, MHPCC provides Department of Defense, government,
commercial, and academic users with access to massively parallel computing
resources, high-performance storage, expert support staff, and
educational programs. MHPCC has a special focus in the areas of image and
signal processing, modeling and simulation, and data mining and parallel
databases. Sign up for the tour at the registration desk by 12:00 noon
on Wednesday. You must provide your own transportation to the center.
Registration will be from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 20,
near the Hale Makena and will be followed by a reception from 6:00 to
8:00 p.m. in the Pu'u Ola'i Gardens of the Maui Prince Hotel. The Annual Banquet
will be held on Wednesday, July 23, in the Pu'u Ola'i Gardens, overlooking
the Pacific Ocean. The dinner buffet will include vegetarian options. Prior to
the banquet there will be a cocktail party in the Holokai Pavilion followed by
the presentation of the Leonard and Barringer Medals and the Nier Prize
in the Prince Ballroom.
Lunches: Special subsidized buffet lunches will be available to
registered participants outside the Prince Ballroom on Monday, Tuesday, and
Thursday (price including taxes and gratuity: $12.00).
Haleakala Crater: This trip is already fully booked, and
information will be sent directly to those who have registered for it.
Youngest Lava Flow on Maui: On Wednesday afternoon, July 23,
there will be a hike to see the vents and flow of the ~1790 AD East Maui
Volcano southwest rift zone eruption. This flow is only a few minutes from the
conference hotel and we will leave just after lunch in whatever rental cars
we can round up. The hike is about 2 miles round trip and relatively flat
(but the weather will be hot). The flow is a rather spectacular ankaramite and
the vents are very interesting. We will leave from the hotel lobby at
1:30 p.m., sharing rental cars, and will return to the hotel about 4:00 p.m.
Kilauea Volcano: This trip is fully booked,
and information will be sent directly to those who have registered for it.
Don't leave valuables in unattended cars. Use sunscreen with a
high SPF (>25) to prevent sunburn and wear a wide-brimmed hat. Swimming
at some beaches may be dangerous under certain conditions; read the
warning signs. Informal wear, such as aloha attire, is the norm for Hawai'i.
For those participating in hikes, bring good hiking boots or walking shoes and
1 liter of drinking water.
A
downloadable registration form and
electronic registration
form are available.
Please note: Admission to all social functions and scientific sessions
requires registration and the wearing of a badge. No separate
tickets will be sold to any event.
Payment should be made in U.S. dollars to the Lunar and
Planetary Institute. You can pay by Visa, Mastercard, American
Express, or check.
Cancellation Policy: Full refund of the registration fee will be made
for cancellations received before July 1, 1997. A 15% cancellation fee will
be charged on cancellations received between July 1 and July 10, 1997.
No refunds can be made after July 10.
