WHEN AND WHERE
The scientific symposium "Solar System Remote Sensing," which honors the career of Dr. Bruce Hapke, will be held September 2021, 2002, at The University Club, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. A banquet honoring Dr. Bruce Hapke will be held on Friday evening, September 20.The University Club is located at 123 University Place and is 27 miles from the Pittsburgh International Airport. Limousine service is available from the airport to the meeting site.
PURPOSE AND SCOPE
The scientific accomplishments of Dr. Bruce Hapke during his long career have played an important role in establishing planetary remote sensing as a quantitative science. In 2001 Dr. Hapke was awarded the Kuiper Prize by the American Astronomical Society's Division of Planetary Science to honor his contributions. This scientific symposium celebrates Dr. Hapke's career by presenting the state of the art in remote sensing science and applications. The symposium encompasses the fields of photometry and spectroscopy and their applications to planets and objects within the solar system.Over 40 abstracts were submitted, including invited, solicited, and contributed presentations. This international meeting presents the current state of research over a wide range of topics including:
MEETING FORMAT
- Photometric theory
- Spectroscopic modeling
- Laboratory exploration of scattering phenomena
- Space weathering processes throughout the inner solar system
- Photometric and spectroscopic studies of the Moon, Mars, Mercury, and asteroids
- Photometric and spectroscopic studies of cold, icy places such as comets and outer planet satellites
The intent of this symposium is to bring together the three communities of remote sensing theoretical modeling, observation, and laboratory measurements to present the state of the art in the fields of photometry, spectroscopy, and their applications through oral presentations and focused discussions. The meeting consists of 7 invited presentations, 12 solicited presentations, and 27 contributed presentations. A special issue of Icarus is planned to bring together a series of papers as an outgrowth and summary of the results presented at this meeting. The preliminary program and abstracts are now available in PDF format, viewable with version 4.0 (or higher) of the Adobe Acrobat Reader, which is available from the Adobe Web site.
CALL FOR PAPERS
A special section in the journal Icarus will be devoted to papers relating to this symposium. The deadline for submissions to this special issue is June 30, 2003. All papers will be subject to the usual peer-review process. Format and submission rules are posted on the Web at http://Icarus.cornell.edu.REGISTRATION
A fee of $100.00 ($25.00 for students) will be assessed each participant to cover various workshop services. The registration fee includes the cost of the banquet. You must preregister and prepay by August 16, 2002, to avoid the $25.00 late fee. Please return the downloadable preregistration form with your payment before August 16, 2002, to avoid the $25.00 late fee, or you may use the electronic preregistration form if paying by credit card. Foreign participants who state on the registration form that they have a currency exchange problem may pay in cash at the meeting and avoid the $25.00 late fee if they return the form by August 16, 2002.
Cancellations with requests for refunds will be accepted through September 1, 2002. Please note that a $10.00 fee will be charged on all cancellations.
On-Site Registration
Registration will begin at 8:00 a.m. on Friday morning. A continental breakfast will be served during the 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. registration period prior to the start of the first session. Registration will continue to be available for the remainder of the day until 5:00 p.m. On Saturday registration will be available from 8:00 a.m. to noon.HOTEL RESERVATIONS
Participants are responsible for making their own hotel reservations. A block of 30 rooms has been reserved at The University Club located at 123 University Place (phone: 412-621-1890) under the name "Bruce Hapke Symposium." The rate for these rooms is $87.00/day, which includes continental breakfast, coffee in the room, a morning newspaper, and parking. Many Web sites offer information on hotel accommodations and may offer discount rates.
