Meet the team from the California Academy of Science

We are the Careers in Science Interns at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, California. The Academy is a natural history museum, aquarium, and planetarium all under one roof. The mission of the Academy is to explore, explain, and protect the natural world. The museum contains many research departments, such as Entomology, Anthropology, Herpetology, Ornithology &Mammalogy, and Ichthyology. Scientists at the Academy use their research to educate the visitors and to gain more knowledge and appreciation for the natural world.

The Careers in Science (CiS) program offers hands on science experience to high school students from all over San Francisco. CiS interns have opportunities to learn, conduct, and teach science in different environments.  They are able to accomplish this through activities such as lectures, labs, citizen science projects, project-based learning groups, and research assistance positions with a staff mentor. The Lunar project is being taken on this year by the following interns:

Maria is a senior at The Academy of Arts and Sciences High School and participates in a Japanese Taiko Drumming group. At the Academy, she works with aquarium staff to care for reptiles and amphibians in the rain forest exhibit.

Rabiya, a junior at Mission High School, is the president of the Muslim Student Association at Mission High. Also a participant at College Track, students are prepared for college, careers, and future endeavors. Lastly, she volunteers at the Mission Bay branch library, working along with the teen librarian to get teens involved in more activities in the community.

Reina is a junior at George Washington High School and is currently a member of Key Club, a national community service association, and the GWHS Dance Company, which performs all over the Bay Area.

Joseph, a junior, who also attends George Washington High School, compete on the Men’s Volleyball team and is the vice-president of the oldest volunteer club at Washington, Eagles Service Society.

We are all excited to collaborate on the Lunar Research Project and pursue our interest in lunar research.

Meet the California Academy of Science Mentor, Dr. Benjamin Greenhagen

Dr. Benjamin GreenhagenDr. Benjamin Greenhagen is a research scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. His primary research interests center on remote sensing of airless bodies such as the Moon, Mercury and asteroids, with an emphasis on thermal spectroscopy. Dr. Greenhagen currently serves as the Deputy Principal Investigator of the Diviner Lunar Radiometer onboard NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. Diviner launched in 2009 and continues to return a unique dataset that enables Dr. Greenhagen and the Diviner science team to understand the thermal and compositional properties of the lunar surface.
