Meet the Woodstock Union High School Mentor, Debra Hurwitz

Debra HurwitzDebra Hurwitz is currently a graduate student in the Department of Geosciences at Brown University, and her research focuses on the origin of sinuous, eroded lava channels on the terrestrial planets with a particular emphasis on Mars and the Moon. Her studies investigate the timing of channel formation and use analytical models of channel erosion to constrain the time required to form the channel, to constrain possible compositions of lava that flowed through the channel, and to determine relationships between channel formation and the evolution of Martian and lunar volcanism. Debra plans to apply her continued studies of surface processes on planetary bodies to planning future manned and unmanned space exploration missions.
