Clementine UV-VIS images make up this false-color view of the Orientale Basin (the false color scheme is the same as used elsewhere; see caption for slide #8). Deep reds represent the mature highland surfaces of the Orientale ejecta blanket, while blue colors are very fresh impact features. Oranges and yellows are fresh mafic materials (i.e., those units relatively rich in iron), such as the basalts of central Mare Orientale. The large blue area near the top of the false-color image is an artifact caused by inaccurate phase correction. The false-color image is overlaid on a shaded relief map of the basin to aid in the location of specific features. For comparison, the Clementine 750-nanometer albedo image is shown on the right.
