Olympus Mons was a target for some high-resolution (approximately 15 meters/pixel) imaging during the final phase of the Viking Orbiter Survey Mission, and a high-quality image dataset was developed, from which a topographic map and a chronology of summit collapse could be derived. Here the topography (in kilometers above the 6.1-millibar datum) and the sequence of collapse events as determined by Mouginis-Mark and Mathews (1987) are compared. See slide #36 for the geomorphology of the caldera. Slide courtesy of M. Zuber. Right click here to download a high-resolution version of the image (8.8 MB) |
