21. Vesicular Volcanic Rock, Hawaii

Pits or vesicles in volcanic rocks are caused by exsolved volatiles emerging as gas bubbles on eruption. The vesicles seen here are in lavas erupted from Mauna Ulu Volcano in 1969. A camera lens cap provides the scale.
