7. Pavonis Mons
7. Pavonis Mons

The circular caldera portrays only a single collapse event, in contrast to the complex caldera on Ascraeus Mons (slide #5), but it is possible that smaller collapses preceded the last event and were completely eliminated during the formation of the present caldera. A large portion of the summit of Pavonis Mons has undergone subsidence that did not result in the formation of a caldera; the ridge to the northeast of the caldera marks the edge of the zone of subsidence. The small white features west of the caldera have been interpreted to be dust clouds generated by relatively strong winds blowing downslope on the volcano.
