VOLCANOS

Shield Field

This image shows a cluster of small volcanos, known as a “shield field,” centered at 78.4°S, 43.0°E. There are hundreds of these clusters and thousands of volcanic edifices of this size on Venus. While some of these clusters are associated with larger volcanic structures, most, like this cluster, are located in the volcanic plains. Note that at high latitudes the viewing angle for Magellan’s radar dish is much more sensitive to changes in topographic slope than surface roughness, and consequently this image displays less variation in brightness than most of the other slides.
