LPI Scientist Runs Geophysical Survey Expedition

Dr. David Kring, led a team of faculty and graduate students from the University of Houston and the University of Texas-Austin in a series of geophysical surveys (seismic, radar, and magnetic) of Meteor Crater, Arizona. The investigations, which will be integral to several M.S. theses, include studies of fault and fracture systems produced during that meteorite impact, and of the thickness and distribution of the ejecta blanket produced by the impact.

LPI Scientist Organizes Instrument Team Meeting

Dr. P. Spudis organized and attended a science team meeting for the Mini-RF radar science instrument/experiment on the Lunar Reconaissance Orbiter (LRO) spacecraft. Dr. Spudis is a co-I for that instrument, which has provided strong evidence of abundance ice near the Moon’s poles. The meeting included field studies of relevant sites, including the Meteor Crater (led by LPI scientist Dr. David Kring) and the SP cinder cone volcano. For more information, see Dr. Spudis’ blog entry.

LPI Scientist Appointed at French University

Dr. S. Clifford began an appointment as an Invited Professor at the Laboratoire de Planétologie de Grenoble, Université Joseph Fourier, Grenoble, France. Dr. Clifford will be working with Drs. W. Koffman and A. Herique (and their students) on geologic and hydrologic investigations of Mars using orbital sounding radar.
