(1) Field Testing

What additional public terrestrial analog spectral data sets (field, airborne) are most needed to support timely interpretations of current and planned data sets of Mars?

Participants will address what airborne and field data sets are most important to acquire first for the community, in light of the Mars program goals, the currently available data sets and instrumentation, funding, and most time-critical problems. For recommended sites (listed below), we will discuss the relevance, data already acquired, and recommended community data to acquire (airborne, field, lab).

This is a complex topic. The goal here is to develop the foundation for a comprehensive workshop in Feb, 2003, in order to produce recommendations in time for the next field season and R&A proposal cycle. It will also address the need to provide an enabling foundation for reviewers of instruments for the 2009 lander.

Sites submitted for discussion:
1. Meteor Crater, Arizona
2. Lunar Crater, Nevada
3. Dry deserts, e.g. Antarctic dry valleys
4. "Parking lot" measurements of selected endmembers
5. Atacama Desert, northern Chili
6. Ancient lake bed sediments
