NASA: Mars Fundamental Research Program

Tomasz is a PI on a grant from NASA Mars Fundamental Research program. The project title is Origin of Martian Valley Networks - A Computational Approach. The goal of this project is to understand the origin of Martian valley networks using a quantitative and objective approach that relies on computational methods. The project has three broad objectives. The first objective is to establish a method for an automatic and objective mapping of valley networks and their associated drainage basins using digital topography data. The second objective is to perform the comprehensive mathematical and statistical analysis of valley networks and their basins to facilitate quantitative comparison between Martian and terrestrial systems. The third objective is to simulate the origin of valley networks using landscape evolution models and to compare the results of these simulations to real Martian and terrestrial landscapes using quantitative measures.
