The Great Desert: Geology and Life on
        Mars and in the Southwest

Great Desert Workshop -- Index

The Great Desert teacher training workshop was held in mid July, 2003. We spent the first three days in the field, travelling from Albuquerque to the Grand Canyon, studying the Grand Canyon, and visiting Sunset Crater cinder cone and the Meteor Crater on our return to Albuquerque. We spent the next two days in the classroom at the University of New Mexico, focussing on Mars and the analogs between it and what we'd seen. Friday was spent travelling through the Jemez mountains, emphasizing life in desert soils and hot springs, and the geology of volcanos. On the last day, back in the classroom, we emphasized life: the energy it needs, microscopy of microbes in the samples we collected on Friday, and detection of microbial life by remote sensing.
