Slump Blocks

At the bases of these landslides in Gangis Chasma (and many others in Valles Marineris) are fields of slump blocks, which are relatively solid blocks that fell during the landslide. Sometimes, the original land surface can be recognized in slump blocks, but more often the slump blocks just jumble up at the bottom of the landslide. When the land surface (or other layering) can be seen, it is often tilted back towards the wall. The landslides in Gangis Chasma (as in the rest of the Valles Marineris) show few meteorite impact craters, and so are quite young; they probably formed in the Amazonian Epoch of Mars' history.
