Impacts and Craters
In Texas, teachers are expected to teach about catastrophic events and the forces that shape the features of the Earth, which may include impacts and cratering. Teachers are also expected to teach about the features of the Moon and other objects in our Solar System, many of which are dominated by impact craters.
5.12 C The student is expected to identify the physical characteristics of the Earth and compare them to the physical characteristics of the moon
6.13 A The student is expected to identify characteristics of objects in our solar system including the Sun, planets, meteorites, comets, asteroids, and moons
7.14 A The student is expected to describe and predict the impact of different catastrophic events on the Earth
8.14 B The student is expected to analyze how natural or human events may have contributed to the extinction of some species
Preliminary Concepts
Students need to understand what comets and asteroids are before they can understand what an impact crater is.
