LPI Participates in National Astronomy Festival

The Lunar and Planetary Institute (LPI) participated in the Sixth Annual Astronomy Festival on the National Mall in Washington, DC, on Friday, June 10, 2016 from 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.
The free public stargazing event, which was organized by Dr. Donald Lubowich, Coordinator of Astronomy Outreach at Hofstra University, was attended by more than 700 visitors to the nation's capital. Visitors were given a guided tour of the sky by amateur astronomers and were able to safely view the Sun, Moon, Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars. The event featured planetarium shows under a 25-foot portable dome and hands-on interactive exhibits. All the festival’s activities took place near the Washington Monument.
LPI science and education staff were on hand to discuss the latest in lunar and solar system science and exploration, as well as answer visitor questions about the solar system and discuss careers in science. Handouts for all ages were also available. LPI participation in events like these present prime opportunities to inspire future generations of explorers.
