Professional Development for Scientists: Mental Health in Planetary Science
August 27, 2024
Join the Lunar and Planetary Institute for a virtual professional development session on Tuesday, September 17 beginning at 3:00 p.m. CT (4:00 p.m. ET/ 2:00 p.m. MT/ 1:00 p.m. PT). During this 90-minute seminar, Dr. David Trang will share an overview of survey results which highlight mental health challenges facing the planetary science community. After reviewing his findings, Dr. Trang will explore how feeling a lack of appreciation may be contribute to anxiety and depressive symptoms.
The session will focus on (1) intrapersonal strategies for students or scientists to cope with mental health challenges, (2) interpersonal strategies for individuals and groups to support their colleagues and improve their team’s culture, and (3) strategies for creating better working environments as a community. We will consider the scientific foundations of these strategies and will practice implementing different counseling techniques.
All individuals, regardless of career stage or discipline, are welcome to attend this free, professional development opportunity.
RegisterDr. David Trang is a planetary scientist with the Space Science Institute whose research focuses on surface processes and composition of airless rocky bodies. He is also a pre-licensed mental health counselor, and works as an academic coach at Hawai‘i Pacific University with the Ho‘okō Rising Scholars Program, where he helps under-resourced students transition into college and improve life and academic skills to succeed in their future endeavors.
Dr. Trang received his undergraduate from the University of Hawai'i at Hilo in 2009 in Astronomy and Geology and received his Ph.D. in Geology and Geophysics from the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa in 2014.
