Astronauts, Robots, and
21st Century Exploration

A panel of astronauts and planetary scientists shared their thoughts on the roles of robots and humans in the exploration of our solar system and beyond during an evening event held October 5, 2006, hosted by the Association of Space Explorers, the Planetary Society, and the Lunar and Planetary Institute.
Panelists included Dr. Thomas Jones, moderator, former astronaut and representative of the Association of Space Explorers; Dr. Louis Friedman, Executive Director of The Planetary Society, Dr. Jeffrey Hoffman, former astronaut and Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Colonel Carl Walz, former astronaut and Acting Director of the Advanced Capabilities Division of NASA’s Exploration Systems Mission Directorate; Dr. Paul Schenk, Staff Scientist at the Lunar and Planetary Institute; Dr. Stephen Mackwell, Director of the Lunar and Planetary Institute; and Captain John Young, former astronaut and lunar explorer.
