The library organizes and maintains a collection of space science-related materials in a variety of media, including books, journals, documents, maps and images to facilitate lunar and planetary science research and disseminates information to the educational and public communities. The collection is one of 17 international NASA Regional Planetary Image Facilities (RPIFs). References services are provided to scientists, educators, students, media representatives and the public requesting information related to lunar and planetary science.
The library collection includes over 63,000 cataloged books, documents, maps and globes, videos, as well as access to more than 300 journals and newsletters. The subject emphasis of the collection is space science, astronomy, and geology.

Bound journals should not leave the building. Globes, models, and other special circulating equipment will be checked out on a case-by-case, as-needed basis.
The library at LPI has a variety of equipment that is available to qualified users such as light tables, copy stand, and scanners. Temporary workspace and meeting tables are available for users. The reference staff can assist with using the collection, equipment, and with identifying and obtaining materials.
