WHERE AND WHEN
A workshop on Impact Cratering:  Bridging the Gap Between Modeling and Observations will be held on February 7–9, 2003, at the Lunar and Planetary Institute (LPI). The LPI is housed in the Center for Advanced Space Studies, 3600 Bay Area Boulevard, Houston, Texas.

SCOPE AND PURPOSE
The purpose of this workshop is to discuss how physical observations of craters, both on the Earth and on other solid bodies of the solar system, can be combined with the results from modeling of impact cratering for a better understanding of the impact cratering process.

The main goals of the workshop are to reconcile physical observations with theoretical and experimental modeling of impact processes, and to point out areas that future studies should focus on to improve the observation/modeling connection.

WORKSHOP FORMAT
Morning sessions will run from 8:30 a.m. until 12:15 p.m., and afternoon sessions will run from 1:30 until 5:15 p.m. Each session will generally begin with two invited talks of 30 minutes, one by a modeler and one by an observer, with the remainder of the talks as contributions. A general discussion will occur at the end of each session.

A poster session and reception is scheduled for the evening of the first day, with posters remaining on display throughout the entire meeting.

A moderated discussion will be held on the last day to wrap up the workshop.

The preliminary program for the workshop is now available.

A social event is planned for the evening of Saturday, February 8, 2003.

POSTWORKSHOP REPORT
A technical report that includes workshop overviews and a synopsis of the results of the meeting will be produced and distributed in electronic format. Authors will be allowed to submit revised versions of their abstracts through February 28, 2003. Another potential product of the workshop is the publication of a journal special issue with invited synthesis papers and additional submitted papers. If produced, it would be available within 12–18 months after the meeting.

REGISTRATION
A fee of $90.00 ($50.00 for students) will be assessed each participant to cover various workshop expenses. You must preregister and prepay by January 3, 2003, to avoid a $25.00 late fee.

Please return the downloadable preregistration form with your payment before January 3, 2003, to avoid a $25.00 late fee, or you may use the electronic preregistration form if paying by credit card. Foreign participants who state on the registration form that they have a currency exchange problem may pay in cash at the meeting (and avoid a $25.00 late fee) if they return the form by January 3, 2003.

Cancellations with requests for refunds will be accepted through January 23, 2003. Please note that a $10.00 fee will be charged on all cancellations.

HOTEL RESERVATIONS
Participants are responsible for making their own travel and hotel reservations. For your convenience, we have provided a list of local hotels and an area map showing their locations.
