Date:  October 5–6, 2006
Location:  Santa Cruz, California

  PURPOSE AND SCOPE

We have entered an era of detailed spacecraft reconnaissance of asteroids and comets. This exploration is motivated by the hazards these bodies present, by curiosity regarding our closest celestial neighbors, by our desire to understand how planets form, and by visions for a human future in space. There is no consensus regarding the global properties of comets and asteroids, so we convene this workshop to come up with the best ideas for interior reconnaissance. The focus is characterization, and the scope includes orbital instruments, surface rovers, penetrometers, landers, and active experiments.

  WORKSHOP SCHEDULE

Technical sessions will be comprised of invited and contributed talks and posters in a setting that will include plenty of time for questions and discussion. Invited talks will focus on overview science and on key relevant mission or engineering results. Contributed talks and posters will emphasize science requirements, mission concepts, specific ideas for instrument designs and operations, and asteroid and comet mission and science results. The workshop will produce a set of peer-reviewed papers or a published proceedings volume, plus a set of workshop recommendations.

A preliminary program with abstracts is now available.
