DISCOVERY OF THE ELYRIA, KANSAS, IRON METEORITE

Name: ELYRIA

Place of find: Elyria, McPherson County, Kansas.

38°16.8'N, 97°21.9'W.

Date of find: Recognized as a meteorite in 1971.

Class and type: Iron. Medium octahedrite.

Number of individual specimens: 1

Total weight: 10.9 kg

Circumstances of find: The meteorite was plowed up near the brow of a low hill. It was encased in a layer of oxide about 4 to 5 mm thick.
