Meteorite Type: L3 chondrite

 

Macroscopic Description: Cecilia Satterwhite

Although this small meteorite is completely- covered with fusion crust, the interior is very weathered, having an orangish-brown color. Some inclusions are still visible.

 

Thin Section (,2) Description: Brian Mason

The section shows numerous chondrules and chondrule fragments, up to 1.1 mm across, in a granular matrix consisting largely of olivine and pyroxene with small amounts of nickel-iron and troilite. The meteorite is considerably weathered, with brown limonitic staining throughout the section. Microprobe analyses show olivine and pyroxene of variable composition: olivine, Fa1-22, mean Fa14 (CV FeO is 49); pyroxene, Fs3-17. The small amount of nickel-iron suggests L group, and the variability of olivine and pyroxene compositions type 3, hence the meteorite is classified as an L3 chondrite (estimated L3.5).
