DISCOVERY OF THE MAR'INKA, USSR, IRON METEORITE Name: MAR'INKA Place of find: About 25 km WSW. of Donetsk, Ukraine, USSR. 47°54'N., 37°30'E. Date of find: 1976 Class and type: Iron Number of individual specimens: I Total weight: 144 g Circumstances of find: Found in carboniferous rocks of age 285-340 m.y. Source: N. P. Refer to the original to be sure of accuracy. Mar'inka, revised entry Found 1976 Iron. Coarsest octahedrite, Ogg (IIB) Mar'inka is listed in the BM Catalogue as iron, "found in coalbearing carboniferous strata at Mar'inka (Donetsk, Ukraine) dated at 285-340 m.y." This iron was classified by Alekseev et al. (Meteoritika 46, 1987, 81-85) as IIB-Ogg, very similar chemically and also morphologically to Sikhote-Alin fragments collected at the crater field. Cosmogenic Mn-53 is also similar to Sikhote-Alin values; it gives a terrestrial age of < 10 m.y. Alekseev et al. conclude that Mar'inka cannot be a fossil meteorite, but is probably a fragment of Sikhote-Alin, while some details of its trace element chemistry differ from Sikhote-Alin.
