Northwest Africa 1880

Western Sahara

Achondrite (diogenite)

A single stone of about 7 g was found in 2002 by an anonymous finder in the Western Sahara and purchased in 2002 in Erfoud. Classification and mineralogy (A. Greshake, MNB, and M. Kurz, Kurz): dominated by large orthopyroxene crystals, minor phases include olivine, troilite, and Fe-Al-chromite; orthopyroxene, Fs26Wo3.2, olivine, Fa29.6; oxygen isotopes (I. Franchi and R. C. Greenwood, OU): δ17O = +1.42‰, δ18O = +3.16‰, Δ17O = -0.22‰; low degree of shock; low to moderately weathered. Specimens:; type specimen; 1.5 g, plus one polished thin section, MNB; main mass, anonymous finder.
