DISCOVERY OF THE TENDO, JAPAN, IRON METEORITE

Name: TENDO

Place of find: Yamagata Prefecture, Japan.

38°21'N., 140°22'24"E.

Date of find: About 1910, recognized 1977.

Class and type: Iron. Medium octahedrite.

Number of individual

specimens: 1

Total weight: 10.1 kg

Circumstances of find: Found by a farmer, Mr. Yohachiro Syoji, while digging up a tree root in Nukutsu, Tsuyama-mura (now incorporated into the city of Tendo). It was purchased soon afterwards by Mr. Fusaji Kikuchi who lived nearby and suspected it to be composed of a precious metal. It remained in the possession of this family and was recognized as a meteorite in May 1977 by S. Murayama.
