Writeup from MB 113:
Ulmiz, reclassification Petrography: (B. Hofmann, Bern): Chondritic texture, brecciated. In thin section, material of petrographic type 4, with extremely fine-grained, recrystallized chondrule mesostasis, is common. There are several chondrules and clasts with isotropic brown glass, showing the presence of petrographic type 3 material. Feldspar size is bimodal with main abundances at 10-20 μm and 50-80 μm. Mean chondrule size is 0.43±0.21 mm (n=108). Geochemistry: Olivine Fa17.6±0.6 (N=20, range Fa16.6-18.8), Fa by XRD 18.0; pyroxene: Fs16.1±0.5Wo1.2±0.3 (range Fs14.3-17.3Wo0.8-1.6, N=27). Classification: Umiz was recognized as H chondrite during a magnetic suceptibility measurement and confirmed by mineral analysis. Reclassification as H chondrite breccia based on magnetic susceptibility, mineral composition and mean chondrule size. Petrographic type 3-6 (breccia) based on presence of brown glass in some chondrules, a range of feldspar size up to 80 μm, and brecciated texture. Shock stage S2. Weathering grade W0. | ||||||||||||
